Top 10 Most Formative Albums for your metal tastes

First metal shit I heard in mid 80's was:

KEA
RTL
Piece of Mind
Sabbath/Priest compilation.

I already knew Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Scorpions and other hard rock/proto metal stuff. Then I got more into thrash, especially Kreator, Testament, Destruction and the like.

In '89 my metal taste changed when I heard for the first time Altars of Madness. It was beyond everything metal was at the moment,in especially in evilness, heaviness and ambition.

Around 91/92 I heard Samael's Worship Him for the first time and it was another leap in heaviness and atmosphere. That album was impossibly dark. It was my first black metal album.

3RRR and 3PBS played at least one song from the album on every metal show for about 2 months after it came out. It was pretty ground breaking for Melbourne radio stations at the time.

Always been hard for me to do these but I'll give it a shot. Recounting from ages 13-16:

1.) Black Sabbath - Paranoid: The first heavy metal CD I ever got when I was younger. Got it for Christmas along with a Gorillaz CD. The song War Pigs stands to be my favorite Sabbath tune ever.

2.) Crowbar - Odd Fellows Rest: When I was like 14 or 15 one of my brother's friends showed me these guys since they played a big influence on their band Alabama Church Fire. A year later I ended up joining that band and eventually left that band after like 2 months. Besides that point, this was the staple getting me into the massive weight that is Crowbar.

3.) Acid Bath - When the Kite String Pops: Easily one of my Top 10 records of all time. I discovered them on a whim at a record store. The album art horrified me because I knew what it was a painting of, so I put off getting it. I went back the next day and decided to grab it and I'm fucking glad I did.

4.) Cannibal Corpse - The Wretched Spawn: The first death metal CD I ever bought. Also my favorite CC album.

5.) Death - Individual Thought Patterns: @CiG introduced me to Death when we were both on GaiaOnline, but he started me with Scream Bloody Gore. I ended up finding more of their stuff and ITP became my favorite instantly.

6.) Lamb of God - Sacrament: My eldest brother was the one who got me into metal mostly, but wasn't really into a lot of the underground stuff. Metallica, LoG, Corrosion of Conformity, and Pantera were his favorites. He gave me this to listen to and my 13 year old brain nearly shat itself.

7.) Dir en Grey - Uroboros: Debatable in calling it metal; though a lot of its tags is Progressive Metal. The album was my starting point in helping me discover my favorite band of all time.

8.) Meshuggah - Destroy Erase Improve: Not sure what to say here. Meshuggah blew my mind when I first heard them. This album in particular.

9.) System of a Down - Toxicity: Besides Black Sabbath, SOAD also started the landmark of my love for metal with this album. Also the first band to get me wanting to play metal in the first place.

10.) Buckethead - Bucketheadland: The first album to get me to appreciate Avant-Garde metal and weird music. This is also one of the most Japanese albums to not come from a Japanese person.

It would have been awesome hearing Altars of Madness when it first came out.
In the eyes of many, death metal back then wasn't exactly that different from thrash. It was a bit heavier and darker, but in terms of sheer speed and riffing style the lines were still a bit blurry. Altars of Madness changed that. It was easily the heaviest album ever. There was some thrash riffing, but the dissonant and tremolo riffs that could even fit black metal, the touch of keyboards, the evil as fuck vocals and the blastbeats were just in a totally different level. It's easily one of the most influential metal albums in history.

Also, when I heard Incantation's Onward to Golgotha for the first time (end if 92, I believe, if not, early 93'), I felt some fear. Man, that album was like Worship Him in terms of darkness and evilness. It was quite the experience.
