Just listened to something pretty shattering that could be the equivalent of my experience with The Sham Mirrors in 2002 (knowing it would make my top ten even before the record ended).....

WINDIR - Likferd

Only listened to it once so I can't review it yet, but I need to share the joy now.

Yep - ordered it from The End about 3 weeks ago and just listened to it last Friday.

Gotta point out man, I only compared the listening experience to Arcturus in that it was an instant hit with me. Otherwise, this is very nordic/pagan/folky stuff, and the guitar harmonies are breathtaking...

Naglfar-Sheol
Nevermore-Enemies of Reality
Enslaved-Below the Lights
Darkthrone-Hate them
Bathory-Nordland II

Just a few for now. still awaiting the new Morbid Angel and Graveland anxiously.

I don't own Porcupine Tree yet (In Absentia) and I've wanted to hear it ever since we put the review up. If one tends to hate prog rock, should one avoid the album?

Well, you could forget to mention the new Porcupine Tree becuase it came out in 2002. :p

Ali, don't avoid it. Honestly I wouldn't even consider it very proggy, but it is incredible. I love Steve Wilson's lyrics, he has a way to get inside the head of a weirdo like me.

Oh yeah, listened to that Solefald yesterday, that was different. Definitely a contender, I can't wait to absorb it more.

Good time to comment on your avatar, that Radioactive Toy hit cracks me up every time I see it. :D

I only have a handful of PT, but it's more Pink Floydish than straight up progressive.

Solefald.... "Buy My Sperm, buy my sperm, buy my sperm, buy my sperm."

Jesus.

It is a good album, but what in the fuck is that?

I have all of Porcupine Tree and it is most excellent. Can't go wrong. First three are much more psychedelic than the rest of the catalog. The parallels to Floyd are interesting at times.

I would start at The Sky Moves Sideways. Fourth album. Or Lightbulb Sun, the release before In Absentia and the limited edition , which is really kewl, too.

Right now, I can't stop playing HASTE's "The Mercury Lift." Has anyone else heard this cd? The songs are so incredibly strong and catchy and I just can't help myself, it's chordrock, but really good chordrock with impassioned vocals and one of Century Media's best releases this year...
I think I just spooged myself.
