Top 2003 Contenders - What have you got thus far?

In other words, maybe it's not the music but your tastes....

Probably true. But musical tastes are relative. What's disappointing to me may not be to someone else. Then again, I admit my musical tastes have changed drastically over the past year or so.

What did you find disappointing about the Moonsorrow and Enslaved albums? For me 2003 has been an average year for releases, but not without its surprises...

I love Voimasta, and still play it often. It was very rowsing viking metal, but it also had that party, drunken viking feeling, kinda like Finntroll.Voimasta was a fun listen. Kivenkantaja lost the fun and drunken feeling and seems to take itself too seriously.

Below the Lights just doesn't have the staying power (for me) that Monumension has. It has its moments, but I end up hitting the skip button to get to them.

Dreamlord, I reviewed something recently that might interest you: Planeshift by RAKOTH (earache).

It's very neo-folk, flute and string driven doom and black metal. It kind of fills the space between Forest Stream and Summoning. An excerpt from the yet-to-be published review..."RAKOTH could well be the afterbirth concoction of JETHRO TULL thrown into a blender with IMMORTAL".

Try it out man: http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/63/rakoth.html

Rakoth is good stuff, very intriguing use of folk and prog influences...has anyone here heard their new one Tiny Deaths yet? I've received mixed opinions regarding it...
Prepare for my review this evening buddy...muwahahaha!

Well I think I may have come across my first true disappointment for this year: Vital Remains. Ugh, I couldn't get past the first half of the CD, fucking Glen Benton won't shut up!!!! "GRUG GRUG GRUG GRUG GRUG GRUG GRUG GRUG DOOOOOOOOO" with... what was that...? Is that a guitar somewhere back there...? On the plus side, the guitar and drum work is amazing, but nothing I haven't heard before. I'll give it a few more spins, hopefully I can get past the horrid vocals.

Hey dude... that book you're reading? It's upside down... :Spin:

This was my main complaint of the record as well ... Glenton seems to growl over everyhthing ... he seems to just go on and on .. but after repeated listens the disc is a grower and shows it musical side.

After 1 1/2 listens, I think it is safe to say that the new Zyklon will be in the top contenders...

Fucking superb!
I really wanna hear this one. However, it has been nearly 2 weeks since I ordered it at The End. Will this be the third time THe End has failed to deliver my CD?

NAD baby....give it a few more spins....everyone thinks it's horrible the first time they hear it. I remember when I first played it to 'Gugs in the car and he balked - especially at the drumming. Few more listens and he was hooked.

The magic of Dechristianize is that there are lots of underlying elements that tend to rear their ugly heads after a few listens. Honestly, it becomes pretty astounding after a while...I hope it works out for you.

Getting by his voice is going to take some effort... not only does he babble incessently but it's so up front in the mix! I will spin it more though, it's just rare that I have to stop listening to an album before its over.

Funny thing is I was expecting all out madness, but this fucker sounds tame next to half the stuff I've been listening to lately. :tickled:

Quick note on Dechristianize: the last half of the album is better than the first half....next time you start it, kick it off from the middle somewhere....

The record definetelly picks up steam as it goes along ... almost like the band is getting warmed up.

I think this is the ebst Benton has sounded since Legion. FUCKING-A BRUTAL!!!!!

The band wanted a vocalist that was just going to lay waste to everything with all out brutality. I agree he doesn't always let it breathe, but the band wasn't looking for that. They just wanted an all out onslaught, which they definitely achieved.

"Saviour To None.."

And do yourself a favor... READ THE LYRICS while listening, adds to the overall blasphemous brutality.

The front cover is pretty blasphemous too. I mean, it feels wrong to look at that image of Jesus dying and then checking out the hot chicks getting done by the Roman footsoldiers.

Yeah... that blasphemy thing actual detracts from the album thusfar. I mean, yeah I'm pretty anti-organized religion myself, but the SATANSATANSATAN crap got old a long time ago. For me. :)

Alright so last night I listened up to track 6 of Dechristianize and then shut it off because I got tired of hearing it. So tonight I follow your advice and started on track 7. Fuck me, those last three songs were pretty good! Glen took a breath or three! I'll try the first 6 again later tonight, but like I said earlier, even if I don't like it, the musicianship is top notch. I can't believe the same dude plays those insane blast beats as well as those blinding lead guitar licks.

Dave Suzuki is sick!!!!!!!!!!

I love this album, it's just so fuckin twisted...

I think the most insane song, vocally, and speedwise is "Infidel"

The title track is one of their best songs. Right up there with Dawn Of the Apocalypse.

Well, well....just wait till you've heard the entire album about 5 times....
