Churning Sea of Absu
What are some of your favorite old school death metal albums?
List off some of the best albums you have heard in the old school scene. There will be a little speculation on when the old school scene started. So if you believe 1985 is the start with seven churches, go from there. Or 1987 with scream bloody gore. I'd say old school dm faded away at around 92-93.

One album to rule them all: Immolation's Dawn of Possession!!! Some others:
Morbid Angel-Altars of Madness
Cannibal Corpse-Butchered at Birth
Death-Leprosy
Obituary-Slowly We Rot
Suffocation-Effigy of the Forgotten
Deicide-S/T
I figured I'd get all the obligatory big names and basics down right off the bat.

Lesser known, sort of.

Desultory-Into Eternity
Therion-Beyond Sanctorum
Unanimated-Ancient God of Evil
Vital Remains-Forever Underground
Ripping Corpse-Dreaming With the Dead
Asphyx-Last One on Earth
Sentenced-North From Here
Demolition Hammer-Epidemic of Violence
Disincarnate-Dreams of the Carrion Kind

I wont go with the obvious answers everyone should know. I'm a pretty big fan of osdm, and have a bit of fun digging through the more obscure stuff.

Necrosanct - Incarnate
Shub Niggurath - Evilness and Darkness Prevails
Torchure - Beyond the Veil
Horror of Horrors - Sounds of Eerie
Molested - Blod-Draum
Atrocity - Hallucinations
Crematory - Transmigration
Morgoth - Cursed
Uncanny - Splenium for Nyktophobia
Carnage - Dark Recollections (this doesnt get near the praise it should.)
Gorefest - False
Sickening Gore - Destructive Reality
Viogression - Expound and Exhort
Unholy - From the Shadows

The best answers are

The Chasm - Deathcult For Eternity: The Triumph
Morbid Angel - Blessed Are The Sick
Therion - Beyond Sanctorum
Possessed - Seven Churches
Incantation - Onward To Golgotha

I like how it went all the big names, some a little lesser known, to super obscure stuff like Torchure and Shub-Niggurath. Everyone of these is straight kick ass though!

Death metal isnt really my thing, but Morbid Angel managed to get my interest, I would say Altars, Blessed, and Covenant are some of my favorite albums of all time. But aside from that, I dont find much appeal in the genre. Same with black metal, I just like Celtic Frost and everything else I have heard just doesnt hit the spot.

If Covenant is one of your favorite albums of all time but no other death metal could grab your interest, chances are you haven't looked very hard.

Forgot one of the greatest death metal albums of all time:

Cancer - Death Shall Rise

Pestilence, Bolt Thrower, Pestilence..Autopsy have interested me. But honestly when you look at those bands I find that they only have 1-2 truly solid albums for each band. MA put out 6 albums I could listen to front to back with ease. And I do find that many DM vocalists are incoherent, I liked Dave Vincent cause I could understand what was going on without having to try hard to decipher what im hearing...I could just enjoy the music instead.

Cancer - Death Shall Rise

Carnage - Dark Recollections is an absolute beast.

Yes good choices, I would also like to add...

Vader - The Ultimate Incantation
Massacre - From Beyond
Suffocation - Human Waste
Baphomet - The Dead Shall Inherit
Morbid Saint - Spectrum of Death
Benediction - Transcend the Rubicon
Sinister - Cross the Styx
Master - S/T

Sentenced - North From Here
Sentenced - Shadows of the Past
Demilich - Nespithe
Demigod - Slumber of Sullen Eyes
Leprosy
Altars of Madness

Just so, OSDM is not my top thing.

Bolt Thrower are fucking awesome. Their records are all in the same vein, they don't change their style a bit through their career but the shit is so good no one cares about this.

surprised no one said Entombed Left Hand Path yet. I know it came out in '90 but it's still what I'd classify as old school dm. A lot of early Scandinavian dm was before it turned to gayness.
