Trivium. Discuss.

When I first heard I though ok this is just like pretty much like all the other bands out there now. Metal riffs with hardcore vocals. So I was like no big deal but they sound good. Then my friends that like thrash metal and that is pretty much all they listen to asked if I had heard of them and I said yeah. They thought they were amazing and I was kinda taken back buy it but started to listen they don't realy bring anything new to the table but there nods to older bands makes me like them alittle more

I think they are way over-rated as there are dozens of bands doing the same thing, only better. They are not bad, don't get me wrong - but they are being given credit for a lot of things they simply took from other bands. And I think the emo chorus thing is really gay.

Number one reason I don't like these guys = for some reason everyone I know who likes them compares them to Death. I'm sorry, but Chuck could destroy anything these guys ever did in a matter of seconds.

I first got into them back in either '03 or '04 after hearing Requiem off Ember to Inferno. I loved it because it was very thrash oriented and I wasn't listening to many bands that were doing the scream/sing thing. Also taking into account Matt Heafy was only 17 when he wrote the songs for ETI, I thought it was pretty damn impressive. Very shortly after that I found out they were coming to town to open for Iced Earth so I went and checked them out. I saw Matt hanging out before the show and appraoched him to tell him that I liked his music and he gave me a perplexed look and said "You know who we are?!" There couldn't have been more than 15 people paying attention to them while they were playing. It's funny to to think back on now.

As far as Ascendancy goes I like it a lot and still do, but as more time passes I prefer Ember to Inferno. Like I said, more thrash influenced and raw sounding. What's happening now is you're starting to see all the backlash from the hype they've been getting and over-saturation in the marketplace of bands that are all using the same formula. If you were to play Ember to Inferno for people who hate Trivium a few years ago they would probably love it. Their next album is going to be very pivotal for them. From interviews I've read it sounds like they want to silence all their critics and I think they can do it.

Here's an early clip of them if you want to see how they were before they broke:

I was waiting for your comments because I know you like this band.

Anyway everyone. If I want to give these guys a chance like I did Arch Enemy and Shadows Fall what should I buy?

Well, I would try to "find" [wink wink] these songs, if you like these you should probably just get both albums

-Requiem
-Ember to Inferno
-Fugue
-Rain
-Drowned and Torn Asunder

I really haven't heard anything that great from Trivium either. To me they sounded like a 2nd rate In Flames knock-off ( and I love In Flames) . This whole "new" scene just doesn't do it for me and it makes it harder and harder to find the good shit.

It reminds me of Ozzfest 05, only went there for In Flames and Iron Maiden. The wait through the shitty acts afetr shitty acts was worth it for a night that I will never forget.

I really liked it when I first heard it, then the songs kinda started dragging. I don't know...I think it's ok though.
If you like them you should check out Bullet For My Valentine -The Poison. Huge riffs and better songs than Trivium. Although you do catch them ripping off old Metallica and that Dimebag sqeal a lot.

I disagree. BFMV doesn't have better songs. They have a few good ones and the rest are what is trying to get marketed for more people who don't like it "too heavy" singing about the ole' lost girlfriend. Unfortunately, Trivium will probably go in this direction if the videos are any clue. They change some lyrics in one and go up about 5 octaves in another place. Yes, if you don't like them for their vocals than you will like B.F.M.V. Personally, after listening to it twice it does almost nothing for me now. Also, IMO, Trivium was one of the first newer bands (w. talent or a good engineer in the studio) that have that "not quite cookie monster vocals" whose chourses' are "friendly". Most newer metal bands coming out with material seem to be following THEM in this fashion.

posted by disipleofthepit :Trivium are fucking terrible! I'd rather stick a rusty nail, covered in horse shit up my dick than listen to Trivium!
Wow, I think I would just turn the cd off but, to each there own. :notworthy

They may be "different" metal, but at least they keep the spirit alive. That nu-metal and emocore and all that kill the genre I so dearly listen to. They are also all quick to give props to whom the grew up on. How many of us older guys on here picked up a Venom record or Mercyful Fate or Black Sabbath record because our fave band mentioned them? I know I was one. So, in a round-about way, its all good.

I actually picked up Ascendancy a few days ago and I'm really enjoying it. There are some great tracks on it. Definitely one of my better purchases lately.

I think it's going to be interesting to see how this band evolves over the next couple of albums.

Haven´t heard much so I headed over to their site and listened. Not terrible or anything but I wouldn´t call them "the saviours of metal" (what is a "saviour of metal" anyway?). Maybe they´ll get better with age?

I hear some In Flames and Evergrey. A bit of Bullet For My Valentine and Galactic Cowboys with all the vocal harmonies.

Meh.

the musics good, killer solos. I have no gripes. After all, the die hards of Judas and Maiden didnt like Anthrax, Metallica or any others, said they were all rip offs. Its new and its gotta start somewhere....
I gotta admit I like Trivium but they're from Orlando where I am, they started in all the clubs I'm playing now, they all went to high school right down the block from me. My friend's band even played with them at Calico Jack's (yes). I'm proud of those kids for suceeding and doing well, I wish my band could do what they are doing. And metal thrashing kansan, I want to conquer the world too! You got the new DVD?

If you base your opinion on what kleft tells you, then you deserve what you get.

Considering his 4 posts (mindless rants I should say) so far and your response, I had to laugh.

Yeah, everyone listen to kleft. Obviously, his taste in music far exceeds that of everyone else on this board. Please kleft, tell us who we should listen to so that we may purge our music collection of all that offends you and spend our hard-earned money on only the music that you approve of. :notworthy :notworthy :notworthy

This is my biggest problem with all the message boards too. Some of these people don't like something and that means it's no good and no one should like it. They just say it sucks and if you like it you have no taste. It's just ridiculous. Someday they might learn it's ok to listen to different things and if they don't want to, I for one don't have a problem with that.
If it wasn't for Charlie and Scott i'd still be just like those people, because I used to be. Just for the record some bands they turned me on to are The Cure, U2, Squeeze, Fishbone, Depeche Mode, Public Enemy and Run DMC.
Thanks guys. Cheers!

If you like coffee and cream you are an idiot and a pussy.
Every morning I thank the powers that be for people like kleft. Why? Because then I don't feel so bad about my own life. To him, I say "thank you for your deep thoughts and insight on this subject. We all feel enlightened and refreshed now.

bah. And for the record, I dont like coffee or cream. Does that make me superior? Nope.

Exactly! My musical tastes run the gambit between classical and death metal. I always laugh at the guys who say my tastes suck. I'm willing to give just about anything a shot (except country). My attitude is have an open mind and just enjoy the music!
