Turisas cancels ProgPower USA appearance

While this sucks (I LOVE Turisas and absolutely loathe Blackguard), I find it funny that somehow Turisas is called "gimmick metal" while Blackguard isn't. That's just classic. Turisas at least have viking heritage and such, and play that up with their stage setup and stage clothes, not to mention their music. Blackguard doesn't have a drop of pirate blood in them and yet they play up that gimmick. Granted, they aren't Swashbuckle, but goddamn, they aren't that far off. The idiocy of these posts are getting worse, is there something in the air?

you said it better than I was going to....thanks my freind.

Any particular reason you went with the replacement rather than just extending sets/shortening the day and offering 'blind-sponsors' the oppertunity to sponsor a band who might have been open?
I would guess it's a combination of:
1) They're already gonna be there since they're touring with Kamelot and Leaves Eyes.
2) Adding them isn't particularly expensive since there's no added travel cost and they probably don't have a high booking fee.
3) Losing Turisas may have hurt some people who were on the fence about going, but I doubt that adding Blackguard will lose anymore potential attendees. They may still help sell a few more tickets, although to what degree I don't know.

tl;dr: convenient, cheap, no real downside (I'm guessing)

When I first read all the build up about "the mystery band" I thought; Lordi, HIM, Volbeat, maybe by a long stretch Dir en Grey. Hearing Turisas was really disappointing. First of all I had seen them once already on Pagan Fest. Seeing them on this bill with TYR just looked to be an attempt to pick up on a chic trend to help boost sales. Obviously that has been confirmed in this forum. Though it did seem odd since the trend seems to be dying off. TYR seemed really odd just considering the response they got all five times I saw them with these Pagan things, it was very poor.
So this band not being there really doesn't disappoint me, my girlfriend will hate to hear of this I'm sure. As for Blackguard well that seems to be the same logic as Turisas. Again I'm not personally interested, I'm sure I'll catch them many times as they are pimped out on every tour.
ProgPower is one of the few times to see bands that I normally would not get a chance to. On the other hand I think there are plenty of home grown bands that could work with this type of exposure; Icarus Witch, Twisted Tower, Slough Feg, etc. Or even some who don't play the U.S. at all like Solitude Aeturnus or Halloween. But that goes off into a totally different subject...
I'm sure Glenn knows what he is doing and why he does it, obviously it has been working thus far. It sucks to hear this has happened and I raise my glass to Glenn for handling it so well and quickly.

Well, I went from being excited to seeing a band I've been looking forward to seeing, to basically taking that set for a break. I've seen Blackguard, and while they were pretty good for what they do, it is so not my thing.

It is a kick in the nuts for some of us as well. Sorry Glenn.

*snicker* And Turisas is the gimmicky one? Right.

That's because sonically, they really couldn't be more out of place with the rest of those bands, who mostly have their roots in death and black metal (Turisas notwithstanding.). Tyr's pace and sound has always been more proggy than anything, and the lukewarm reaction is rather expected. This is also probably why they went for a more straightforward and heavy sound for their most recent album.

Never said the other bands were not "gimmicky", I was only going by the clues given like everyone else.

To suggest TYR are progressive is a stretch but often "progressive" seems very subjective around here.
I have seen TYR several times and the only difference I noticed from the other "pagan" bands is that TYR were a little bit more simplistic. But everyone of them had the same annoying chats in every song.
No matter to each their own. The folk/pagan metal thing began and ended for me with Skyclad.
I have nothing more to say on the subject.

Wow. I can't even imagine how livid you must be, to have some jackass treat your business as if it's nothing more than an inconvenience to you, especially after they approached you.

Personally, I think Turisas are a bunch of clowns, who write awful music, whose run will be a short-lived.

Tell us how you really feel, Zod!

I do like Turisas, and this does suck, but I've seen them live before so I'm not hugely disappointed. They were more of a bonus band anyway, I'm much more of a Tyr fan.

I'll add in to the fact that I had much more fun watching Blackguard live than listening to their CD. They might be fun for a few songs at ProgPower, but I think some of the core crowd (forum regs) might not like their harshness of voice (Turisas at least had some cleans every now and then).

It will certainly suck not to be able to sing "Rasputin" at the top of my lungs, though....

Oh well, there's always Paradox, Oceans of Sadness, Seventh Wonder, Stormwarrior, Tyr, Nocturnal Rites, Kamelot, Hammerfall, and fucking TAROT to look forward to during the main fest! :)

Thought sarcasm is hard to convey on a forum, I expected a more intelligent "read" into my response.

Both can be construed as a gimmick. There, it has been explicitly typed.

With that said, I do not regret my donation for the mystery band, and I will still give Blackguard a listen/watch at the show just as I was going to do for Turisas.

Well that's a bummer. I'm a big fan of Turisas, but will give Blackguard a try. I've heard many good things about their shows from other people as well.

Question - when did the email go out? Just curious, the only email I have from Glenn from yesterday doesn't talk about Turisas cancelling.

Man, you play your cards too close to your chest, you need to open up a bit brother... :D

blackguard is pretty killer live, great live show and fit that new wave of folk thingy. :) seen them with ensiferum AND i thought their set was better than ensiferums.

Ed,

Which email address do you have on file with me? I have searched and found 3 different ones in my emails. Perhaps I had you on the mailing list with one that is no longer active? Email me and let me know.

Glen, sorry to hear of that happening.
That really blows.

What chaps my hide though is how when TURISAS were announced, the majority were waving their plastic swords in the air. Now that they pulled out, the majority are saying, "who cares, they are a bunch of gimmicky posers"

Re: what J Golden said - I agree 100% that there are many homegrown true metal bands that could have been selected. In all honesty, such a booking would serve the same purpose, in helping to draw in a crowd which might be on the fence about coming. (Though obviously Turisas, Blackguard, Tyr, etc have been exposed to more of the masses, so I can see why to go for this genre).

No contradiction. When Turisas was announced, fans made their happiness known, and those who didn't care for Turisas(the majority of regular PP fans I would bet), kept their peace. It's a bonus band and they would sell tickets, so why would dedicated PP fans bitch?

Now that Turisas has done something rather er, inexplicable, those of us who didn't really like them feel freer to criticize them.

As for them being a gimmick, lots of gimmick bands in our genre. There's nothing wrong with gimmicks, especially if they are a gimmick no one thought of before, like a capella metal. Of course, if we're drowning in a capella metal bands like we're already drowning in Viking bands five years from now, it will get pretty tired pretty quick.

Excellent post.
