People who fail to see the irony of being a liberal atheist who depends on the state and conservative Christians who fail to see the irony of supporting the maximization of free market.
Women who's dating profiles describe themselves as queer/bi-curious/feminist/sex-positive/anti-rape-culture/gender-fluid/trans-culture/trans-SPECIES/etc. It just seems like a pissing contest for who can identify by the most labels (and be the most progressive/culture-embracing loud-mouth at the feminist rally). Housewives never sounded so sweet.
"My dreams reflect my inner need to embrace others and, together, find our meaning and purpose in life beyond that of which connects us to the stream of consciousness." - the kind of quote that obnoxious ultra optimistic new age spiritual people post on Facebook
Seeing the popular gauged-eared, tatted up metalcore/scene kid from my high school around in Darkthrone t-shirts. Normally I wouldn't care but this kid and his friend group used to ask me why I still listen to old metal. He also didn't seem to recognize any of the bands on my vest. I smell an emerging "totally retro" black metal trend brewing for metalcore kids who jumped ship.
Acquaintances or co-workers who respond to my quietness in a bullying condescending, but maybe half-joking manner that makes me the center of attention. I hate being the center of attention.
Indie rock fans who act as if they listen to music that they have a higher understanding of than the average music fan. Indie is inoffensive experimental soft rock that you can
play just about anywhere without anyone complaining. How is this music underground again?
People who pride themselves on being book-smart but constantly show intellectual-laziness through an unwillingness or inability to defend their positions on issues. In other words, people who are too prideful to consider the other side or admit that they're wrong. This person also preaches open-mindedness and tolerance, unless it's media and culture that comes from another country, or subcultures surrounding metal, punk, and goth, which this person is quick to dismiss as "too negative" or "too scary" to acknowledge. This person is also fearful of the occult, and for the above reasons along with the socially ingrained taboo and its subsequent myths and stereotypes. If you're genuinely fearful to the point of avoidance towards something unconventional or "dark," how they dress, and the music they listen to, you don't get to preach anti-racism, anti-sexism, anti-xenophobia, and anti-homophobia because being averersed towards a subculture to the point of dissociation from it is also a form of intolerance.
Bottom line: You can't claim to be open-minded while being too afraid to know more about something that you don't understand. This is my definition of a pseudo-intellectual and there's no one I dislike more, personally.
