People whose sole understanding of intelligence is limited to grammar, literature, the arts, politics, etc. Basically people who don't understand math and science inclined individuals as a different breed, but equal or superior.
Take my boyfriend for instance, he can't spell for shit and has limited interest in history but the dude is a mechanical genius. He's the kind of guy that builds and wires all his own shit, works on engines, contemplates the geometric aspects of cosmology on a deep level, etc etc. Oftentimes this kind of intelligence is overlooked in favor of more humanity inspired disciplines. I, for one, wish I was more like him, my literature inclinations be damned.
Forums are generally pretty bad for that kind of behavior. Which totally makes sense, because its a word focused world wherein the mechanics and scientists are bored fuckin silly and probably too busy doing something with their hands to debate and exchange essays.

Nah, that's a phenomenon mostly limited to disgruntled non-STEM majors trying to justify their expensive education. Everyone knows deep down that the math/engineering/hard science masterrace is supreme. Actually, the only place I see that at all is on music forums (and not this one).

The people for whom it is mutually exclusive, in my experience, are people who were introduced to maths and science in a shitty way and are still scared of it, or are people who are sound in those fields but basically can't do deep conversation at all and have difficulty explaining concepts in general.

I get that STEM is definitely important and the obvious way forward with our world, but devaluing people in the arts and such is pretty fucked.

anti intellectual people that only appreciate what they see as hard work. there are some who post here really, the people who are really economically right wing or who hate hippies are probably a bit like this. basically, life is worthless and nothing if you don't think about shit and you can't think about shit if you're too busy smashing rocks so that some old wankers can feel that you're not being too lazy.

Yeah but some people just look at you like they're thinking about buttfucking you if you don't put out a massive amount of confidence and small talk bullshit all day. The type of people who do this pretty much deserve to be removed from the breeding pool for good.

Yeah, about what Vimana and SS said. I'm a keep to myself person at work because I have zero interest in being friends with anyone, and it seems like its sometimes perceived as weakness. I'm not socially awkward or shy, I just have enough friends and hate small talk. I tend not to say bless you if people sneeze and dont say bye when I leave, that kind of thing. Really does seem, especially in the office environment where you can't wear headphones, that people take you ignoring them and their gossipy feminine-charged conversations and desperations for vocal contact way too personally.

I have the same kind of experience. Small talk tends to bore me and I'm not the best at faking interest, so I just don't engage in small talk to spare people obvious fake interest they would hate even more.
I also don't engage in a lot of politeness rituals like saying hi and bye (unless I'm talking to the person) because I find them pointless. I love to talk to people, but I like having real conversations, not following cultural scripts. I feel like people just follow cultural scripts of politeness because they want attention but don't want to be themselves. To me it's just so robotic I have no clue how anyone enjoys it, much less gets bitter when someone else doesn't participate.
I personally don't give a fuck if people don't track me down to say hi or bye because we happen to work together. I don't judge people like that. I consider myself to be pretty chill because no one has to be anything for me, and it can create social friction because people expect me to behave a certain way with them. But I'm not a robot. I say what I mean, and just because I don't follow some rituals, it doesn't mean I hate a person, but it gets taken as offense. Oh well.

To me any dialogue is good dialogue. Even among the stupid and/or assholes. You improve your tolerance, learn a bit about yourself, believe it or not you gain new perspectives and you learn how to adapt to bad situations with awful people.

It's actually super easy to do that. This one guy was once giving me shit because he had a girlfriend and I didn't and was putting himself above me because he got laid and I cut him off and said, "congratulations, you stuck your penis in a vagina." Then I clapped and asked the people I was with to join in. He shut up after that.
