True, we need to work towards to technology, rather than trying to come up with it from nowhere. In itself going the speed of light still isn't enough when some planets are multiple AU's away, besides Mars. We should, though, be funding more research.
To the OP on Extraterrestrial Life, Earth can sustain life, but how long can it last? It's possible Mars used to be able to as well, same with Venus. There may have other life in our own Galaxy at one point, but they died off. Also, common sense says we are more likely to travel to where the universe is expanding from if we want to find INTELLIGENT life (Assuming you believe in the Big Bang)- Kenneth doesn't.
In short, yes, I believe in both primitive and intelligent life on other planets. Whether they exist currently is another question.
