Definitely Celtic Frost.. They influenced a lot of good bands, amongst them Darkthrone, one of my alltime faves. I'm listening to Morbid Angel's "Altars Of Madness" now, and I think I can spot certain similarities between Celtic Frost and MA riffs wise.. I may be wrong though.

Oh man, I don't think I can choose. I love all three. They all have made excellent music and have contributed to the development of metal through the years in one aspect or another.

I can't decide between Venom and Bathory, they're both two of my favorite bands...

Celtic Frost made some brilliant music. And i KNOW i'll get burned for this, but i liked Cold Lake. There. I said it. I didn't LOVE it, but i liked it. I also liked Vanity/Nemesis, so in other words, i like all of Celtic Frost's albums, so it's them.

Ummm...what don't people like about those albums?

Forgive me, I'm new to the early black metal scene.

I agree with the people who said Celtic Frost. While Venom and Bathory are certainly important in a novel/historic way for everyone getting into metal, Celtic Frost, for me, just simply wrote better music. To Mega Therion is probably the best classic album of the three bands.

Celtic Frost had virtually no influence on the subsequent development of black metal. The only really significant Tom G. Warrior project was Hellhammer, not Celtic Frost.

I guess I've always recognized venom as completely an image-oriented band, and have never took their music seriously, and how empty it feels, I've dismissed it as shit.

Celtic Frost never appealed to me, but I do enjoy Hellhammer

Bathory, by eons, gets my vote. Bathory has continued to make good album after good album, and were easily one of the predominant influences in early black metal. I'd say Black metal as a whole owes most of it's existance to Quorthon.

No contest: Bathory. Everything from the self-titled album through "Twilight of the Gods" plus "Blood on Ice" is absolutely fucking divine. Not to say Celtic Frost's two first were poor or anything (they rule) but Bathory just stands above most bands in innovation & influence upon others as well as (more importantly) atmosphere, songwriting and just sheer quality.

The video for Cherry Orchards is probably the stupiest thing I've seen in my life. Still I vote CF.
Haha. Shit. Where can one get hold of this? Must see.

BTW, I don't know if I should publicly admit this on a metal forum but I kind of enjoyed the only track I've heard from "Cold Lake". I'll probably pick it up if I see it for $2 or so in some bargain bin. Heh.

Damn tough poll. I love the early Venom stuff, almost all of the Celtic Frost stuff, and probably 75% of the Bathory stuff. I'll have to pick Bathory based solely on the fact that Quorthon has delivered quality over a long period of time while Venom and Celtic Frost kind of petered out.

I had a feeling Bathory would be the most popular. I would put them second. I've actually been listening to Blood Fire Death a lot lately. Is it my imagination or is this album filled with tons of Dark Angel riffs? (better than ripping off manowar I suppose..)
