I am afraid I have to agree with you in this one Lasse. I remember when my only amp was my TSL, I would go over to a friend's house regularly to play through his Powerball/XXL rig, and I thought it was amazing. This was when I was more into djent tones than anything else.and some of the amps are so bad (you know which one I'm talking about) that I almost grew to hate the entire company....way too much hype around them.
I know, in the USA Engl still has got that "boutique" feel to it...
over here every 16yr old DM kid is playing the PB. by now the whole company almost seems cheap to me cause it's very difficult to not connect them with all those PB-kids
...anyway. I ended up getting myself a dual recto, and since then, my mate has sold his engl cab for a mesa one, and is working out ways to sell his powerball so he can get a dual recto. It just sounds like the tone is missing some key elements that make it real, and instead, it sounds kind of compressed and harsh in a way.
Like you said, there was a HUGE engl fad that went around (and is still going around) and everyone wanted a powerball, but I honestly don't see what is so great about them anymore. I don't even find anything that amazing about the SE's...I mean they call it 4 channel but the thing still only has 2 EQ sections. Give me an Invader100 or a Savage any day.
Enough of me ranting...
