What are you learning?

Still working on that Chris Potter tune...in the way of a technique workout, this thing is a beast! I think it's doing more damage on me at this point than I am on it.

Ken- did you ever get a chance to look through that stuff?

Mark- Sorry, didn't notice that before. Sounds good! Audio quality/tone (not necessarily bad tone, just lots of gain) make it hard to make out certain sections. Were you looking for critique? I don't want to overstep bounds and go into "teacher" mode if that wasn't what you were looking for.

Currently Learning- Zomby Woof (zappa)...about 90% done.

^ I remember learning to play it a long time ago on my classical guitar. Really beautiful chord progression.

@noblesavage- Awesome! I haven't worked on much Holdsworth stuff in a while...I need to get back to that. Let's trade transcriptions sometime.

I'm mostly working on writing tunes for the time being, but I'm also working on a ton of Zappa music. I'm playing on a friends senior recital, for which he is doing all Zappa music, so there are some tunes for that, and I've got my trio covering Zomby Woof now. Another guy playing on the recital is putting on a Zappa colloquium in May and he asked me to play on that. I don't know specifically what songs I'll be playing on yet, but the setlist for the event is:

Purple Lagoon
Inca Roads
Don't Eat The Yellow Snow/St. Alfonzo's Pancake Breakfast/Father O'Blivion/Rollo
Moggio
Zomby Woof
Alien Orifice
Oh No
Zoot Allures
Peaches En Regalia
[Village of the Sun]/Echidna's Arf (Of You)/[Don't You Ever Was That Thing?]
[Rubber Shirt or Apostrophe]
Black Page #1
Black Page #2
Illinois Enema Bandit
Camarillo Brillo
Big Leg Emma
Mr. Green Genes
Pygmy Twylyte
Broken Hearts Are For Assholes
City of Tiny Lites
King Kong

I'm already feeling slightly stressed about this undertaking, but also incredibly excited!

You definitely have your work cut out out for you......That is a VERY ambitious set list. Is MZ involved in this as well? I think I remember him being involved in the recital, iirc... On Mattias Eklundh's first solo cd, He does a really good Black Page. When he signed with Vai's Favored Nations, it had to be cut from their release of that cd.

On a related front, a friend who works for Hal Leonard just sent me the latest Zappa book for Over Nite Sensation...I don't know who transcribed it, but I'll be digging into it this weekend, as I have a rare weekend off where I will be @ home... If you need any sheet music, let me know, I'll see if I can help out..

Yep, Marc is on board with this! It is indeed an ambitious setlist, I figure even if we only manage to pull off 75% of it, we will have accomplished some cool stuff. We have a lot of transcriptions between us (I'm supposed to be getting copies of everything this weekend) and Marc has done quite a few of his own, but I'll definitely take you up on that offer if I end up needing something. Actually, I'm really curious to know what you have. Let's take that conversation to PM or FB...I'll hit you up sometime this weekend. Also, how good is the Over-Nite Sensation book? I thought about picking that up, but for things like that album, the official releases always tend to be a total hit or a complete miss. I might have to check that out again.

I'm also very interested in hearing Mattias' version of the Black Page...I'll have to hunt that down. Luckily, I don't have to play on #1 for the show, but I REALLY want to learn that, as much of a son of a bitch as it's going to be.

I'll get you details for the show once they become official, and I'm also hoping this ends up not just being a one-time thing, considering the work that's being put in and the interest amongst those of us on board.

Definitely, although I don't take the time to write out the rhythm - the tabs are generally just so that I don't forget! I get a few PM's a month on the Planet X message board asking for transcriptions, so I uploaded some random (Mostly incomplete) stuff that I had on my hard-drive.
