What are you listening to?

For some reason, I've "avoided" this band for a good amount of time.
It's pretty good.

Also, I heard there was some sort of hostility between Amo and Sentenced in their early days. That true?

@papajohnny: Hell, I love Sentenced! I don't know anything about hostility between Sentenced and Amo fans - Finland is not populous enough to sustain band hostilities :D As a matter of fact, Amo fans have taken me to a bar in downtown Oulu, owned by Sentenced's drummer (? details are vague in my memory), which displays the coffin in Buried Alive. I think Miika Tenkula was a great composer and musician and he is sorely missed.

Where did you hear that? I'm not aware of any, but I wasn't around at the time. They played some of the same underground festivals but otherwise probably didn't have much to do with each other, given the geographic distance. Speaking of Amo/Sentenced connections, I'd love to see Chaosbreed again some day...

New Brymir:

I don't know, really. I read it somewhere.
Maybe "hostility" is a strong word. "Rivarly" is better, I guess.
I wouldn't know, really. As I understood, those two where the only two bigger bands in Finnish underground which played a relatively similar style. Or that's how I understood it. I don't quite believe it, though.
If anything, I think there were more than 2 bands of that style haha

Brymir's debut had good moments.
This song sounds fine as well, but over time, I kinda distanced myself from that sort of metal.

Right, thanks! :D My memories from that day are somewhat hazy - the night in particular. It was preceded by savusauna in a mökki somewhere in the woods beyond Ii, plus the accompanying drinking ;)

Damn it, I've missed this post.
Sounds like a great night, haha.

Finally got around to listening to the Sólstafir Runaway Train cover. Awesome stuff. Love them and am going to pimp Legend to Ms. Tuonelan. Think the NIN meets DM vibe will hit the sweet spot for her.

Got Meshuggah's New Millennium Cyanide Christ in the shuffle on my morning run and now it's earworming me for the day, complete with epic airband visuals from the official video. That shit still cracks me up.

I've been going through lots of Eno's works lately.
It is a bit enigmatic to me that, since I've been listening to his albums mostly while studying, his works are quite complex, yet unobtrusive, but managed to worm their way into my head without actually taking away any of my concentration and focus off studying. In fact, his music helps greatly.

Yeah. I know what you mean. I wrote the first half of my dissertation mostly to minimalist post-rock that had the vocals buried deep enough in the mix to ignore. Stuff like:

All of A Beautiful Machine's releases are available for free download at:

That is pretty good. I quite like it. The guitar at around 5:15 is really moving. Simple, but moving, in a weird sort of way.
Once I'm done with Eno (which might take a while though), I'll download it. Any particular album you'd recommend?
Also, I see releases by other artists on that page, some others which are good?

I pretty much downloaded all of ABM's stuff on there and would put the whole discography on repeat. I couldn't tell you where one album ends and another begins. If I had been on LastFM between 2004 and 2008 you would probably have them in my top artists list over Daylight Dies just because of how much time I spent writing in the first few years of grad school. It's all that minimalist, echo-y drone, but with enough variety to keep it from getting monotonous.

None of the other stuff grabbed me when I first found it, but my tastes have evolved a lot since then so I should likely go back and revisit them.
