These can be in any genre, but the idea is that it's not just angry, aggressive, depressing or what have you, but purely negative. It sits in a bad place and is the kind of music you listen to when you just want everything around you to die.

Some of the first I think of:

  • Totalselfhatred - s/t
  • Black Sheep Wall - Nihility
  • Amenra - Mass III + IIII
  • Cough - Ritual Abuse
  • Indian - Guiltless
  • Nails - Unsilent Death

It can be black, death, grind, post, sludge, whatever. The point is that it isn't fist-pumping or badass, it's just DARK. Whatcha got?

Katatonia - Dead End Kings. This album is pure desperation.

Woods of Ypres - Grey Skies and Electric Light. This album is one of the most chilling and dark albums in existence. The lyrics are extremely personal and presents a pretty bleak view on just about everything. Made all the more bleak by David Gold's death before the album came out.

To be honest, I can’t think of any other albums that are darker than what I’ve already listed. If I do, I’ll be sure to post.

I love Dead End Kings, not sure I'd put it in the list. Woods of Ypres I was a little unsure about because it's not quite so tar-drenched, and maybe it's not purely misanthropic, but it definitely is a gorgeous album.

Yeah, that may be true, but Woods 5 is still unbelievably dark and bleak. I have yet to come across an album that evokes such dark emotions.
It is gorgeous :)

LOL I was talking to a friend and he asked if I'd read the lyrics. I hadn't. So I started following along and yyyyup. That one fits on the list nicely.

Man, I can't list to these albums unless I'm already in a shit mood:

Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Yanqui U.X.O.
Mogwai - Come on Die Young
Jesu - Infinity
Godflesh - Pure
Earth - The Bees Made Honey in the Lion's Skull
Anything by Merzbow or KEN Mode
Swans - Children of God
Thrones - Sperm Whale

Carissa's Wierd - Songs About Leaving

There is not a single more depressing and bleak album out there

Fuckin' Jesu dude... fuckin' Jesu. That's a hard album to stomach even if you ARE feeling kinda down. Curious to check out Thrones and HELL YES Swans. Not metal, but damn Swans is like "hey do you need a reason to jump into a river? Here you go!"

Doom metal would not be what it is without Swans, so while they're not a metal band, they are easy to mention in the same breath. Fuck, there are so many relevant post-punk bands in the metal genre.

Justin Broadrick is a genius.

Of all the Swans albums you could have picked, Children of God? Sure there are some dark songs, but most of it isn't exceptionally negative. I mean In My Garden is flat out lovely and tracks like New Mind and I'll Swallow You are too catchy to really feel negative. Now Cop and Young God are two relentlessly negative albums. The live album Public Castration is a Good Idea is even more severe.

And that Godspeed album is not negative.

Silencer - Death Pierce Me
Eyehategod - Take As Needed for Pain
Lyrinx - Nihilistic Purity
Abyssic Hate - Suicidal Emotions
Lord Mantis - Pervertor
Sunn O))) - Oracle
Austere - To Lay Like Old Ashes
