Im not too into the idea, Opeth dont change their songs up live enough. Still if they made it, I'd buy it right away, and it would definatly be good, but I don't think it would be a "great" live album.
Heres the thing. Opeth are a great live band, but not so much because of the way they play thier songs live (ie bands who extend solos, change up parts and so forth) and thats what makes a good live album usaly. Opeth is great live because of the presence and simply cuz they have brilliant songs and are brilliant musicians. However on a live Opeth album, that wouldn't come through and it would sound the same as the studio album, except with maybe a little change here and there. How amazing Demon of the Fall is live, it won't realy come across on the disc. However I would still buy it if they made it. And I would be more than happy if they made a live DVD...
Yes I would prefer a live DVD... I already have several bootlegs of Opeth so unless they play something ultra rare for the live album, then I dont care.
I think those of you who said youd only buy a DVD and would rather have a DVD are so full of shit. I think you seriously have a lot to learn about music. Live albums are what show a bands true power!! Improv and reproduction!! The Song Remains the Same and Exit Stage Left are just a few of my all-time favorite live albums. Coma Divine and Once in a Livetime are some of the later faves. After seeing Opeth live on the Damnation tour I've been hoping for a 2 disc live to really cement their place at the top of my musical ladder. I mean damn! Live albums are just soo much fun for the listeners and artists! Origin of the Feces has always had a special place in my heart and so has Pulse. When you get a live DVD nowadays you have to hope for 5.1 anyway and it takes forever to be mastered, etc. Bottom line = fuck all those who said they wouldnt by a live album from Opeth!
