What does everyone think of Darkthrone?

Is Under a Funeral Moon anything like A Blaze in the Northern Sky? I really like that one. Or is it more in the style of Transilvanian Hunger? I don't think that one is nearly as great, aside from the title track.

Transilvanian Hunger is the only Darkthrone i have heard, and it was only recently too, and i really enjoyed what i heard. I never understood what the big deal was about people hating Darkthrone, i mean, i think that they are a perfectly good black metal band. I dunno just my opinion i guess :erk: But then again, i don't listen to black metal too often, so i don't think my opinion counts.

not every band has songs like en vind av sorg, wreak and en as i dype skogen etc. but they have some really unlistenably horrible albums (goatlord, total death) and many of the better albums have lots of fillers. if i want to listen to a darkthrone album from beginning to end, i tend to put on either transilvanian hunger or plaguewielder. transilvanian hunger is the pinnacle of that style of black metal, i think.

weak celtic frost throwaway songs, really bad production even by darkthrone standards etc.
they have done that a good bit in other albums too but that came off as the worst, i think. not as bad as goatlord, of course.

I think they are an important part of the BM history and they will always get respect for that. If it wasnt for them the scene would be different today, but not much.

Personally to me their music is nothing amazing. I do have a few of their albums and on a cold winter day its a good listen (with a few bottles of beer). But the attitude that Fenris has towards regulating the balck metal scene with his oppinions of whats true and whats not is silly. He should just do what he does and not judge other bands who have gone beyond the black metal realm and incorporated other influences in the music. Like for instance Dimmu Borgir, most elite black metal OGs hate this band and judge them all the time, Fenris included. But to me Dimmu Borgir musically is way better then Darkthrone. Darkthrone pretty much only has 2-3 songs which they repeat all the time (dont get me wrong like I said this formula works fine on a cold winter day). But I find more depth in other black metal band.

So just the attitude of "we are so anti-cool that we are cool that way" attitude is kind of annoying. And the fact that Darkthrone have this feeling like they have the right opinion of what black metal truly is, is very stupid. There were plenty of black metal bands starting out at the same time as Darkthrone and they even more (in my oppinion) helped define what true black metal is.

I think Satyricon did perfectly what Darkthone could of become. Plus the fact that Darkthorne never play live is really annoying too. They just seems like a lazy bunch of beer heads. Ok now Im starting to sound like I hate them, I dont but theres better stuff out there and (in my oppinion) better bands that truly define what black metal is.

...Emperor (the perfect black metal band)

Well, if you find a rock'n'roll and black metal fusion with some heavy metal undertones to be more "musically deep" than Darkthrone, then I guess you're completely right. ;)
