What does your family/significant other think of the music you listen to?

Mixed emotions in my family. My mom really likes SymX, as does one of my brothers. My other bro lives in the 70's, my aunt thinks I don't appreciate "real music", and my dad thinks its all satanic. So I got a little bit of everything.

well i am not close with my family so im not sure. i think my brother would like it.. but then who knows.

i think my mom would like russells voice if she heard it but i dont talk to her anymore so dunno either.

ya'll know what the ex significant other thought.. (OMG I HAAATE IT TURN IT OFF!! *rolls eyes*). he would tease me mercilessly about them calling them the dragon slayers and making fun of the lyrics. he also was convinced i would run off with a band member if given the chance (little does he know how right he is lmfao)..yeah im puttin shit on him but i can now  ..and hey im only saying the truth. it really hurt.

My fiance` likes it ok, but she's more into radio metal and classic rock. It doesn't bother me though, that she likes Mudvayne and Disturbed cuz it could be worse. She could like country or rap.

My brother and sister hate it, my brother's a loser who doesn't really like music at all. My sister likes pop like Kylie Minogue. My mum and dad put up with it but say that their music is real music and that I should listen to that. I don't think they've actually given it a proper listen, especially Symphony X, to understand the high level of skill the band has and needs to be able to play the music they write. They just assume it's noise without appreciating the actual music. It seems to me that a lot of people think the same thing about metal without actually giving it a proper listen.

know what pisses me off.. u say u listen to metal.. and people automatically dismiss it as screaming headbanging rubbish without even knowing that there are many many classifications of it or taking the time to listen to any.

My parents never really cared much that I listen to a lot of metal as I was still very active when I was younger, and didn't sit in my room and brood like your "typical" metalhead. :)

My significant other had never heard metal besides what would be found on the radio, but she's been liking what I've played for her so far (Dream Theater, SymX, Balance of Power, Pink Cream 69...).

Both my parents and SO think my involvement with ProgPower USA is really cool, so, while they might not like the style of music, they definitely don't hate it, or dislike my listening to it. :)

no one I know likes it, if fact I get made fun of. i don't blame them, they have been brainwashed by the hollywood formula. they just don't have the ears to appreciate great metal. i know we sound elitist, but the great metal bands have more talent that any other category of music except classical. people can't face the facts and actually listen to the music without being biased and completely shug off the extreme skill. i call them all ignorant. i hate alot of music, but I can still appreciate it, however people don't even try to appreciate great metal. maybe because radio stations play the worst fucking metal. but seriously I heard somewhere that it's a medical fact that some people just don't have the ears for complex music and can't properly comprehend all that is happening and dismiss it for a bunch of noice, they can only pick up on a few sounds at once and lose the whole idea.

My mum and dad hated it at first. But then they could see the technical skillinvolved and respected it more, but still didn't like it. So i guess thats good that they can appreciate the skill that goes into it.

My family respects what I listen to. They even drive me to far away concerts and listen to my gigs. My grandma refuses to accept I have no intention in loking like a little angel like I did before, at least to her (had naturally blonde hair and blue eyes, now the hair is red and i dress in chains and leather :tickled: )

My uncles don't mind either.

And my significant other is a metalhead

Mine seem fine with it and my mum and dad are even starting to like Dream theater and Iron maiden. They also like some mellow opeth and i think my dad may like Children of Bodom if there were no black metal vocals. it has an 80's cheese feel to it a bit.
My music tech techer also had to note the name of symphony x when we played it to him.
I dont really dress like a metal head either but i listen to some very heavy music (cryptopsy, dimmu borgir) so i dont think my parents mind much.

My significant other (who is having second thoughts about being in that position) loves metal. She's into bands like Nightwish, Symphony X (loves allen's vocals a lot), Opeth, Soilwork, and even extremes that I'm not into like immortal and other black metal bands. We've even got tickets to the montreal Nightwish show, but if she decides after she has time to "think about us" that it's not going to work, I don't think I'd be comfortable having her there, but the problem is she wants to see them so badly and my car is the one giving the rides to 6 others too :ill:

my ex sigificant other was a metalhead, which is why her and i got together in the first place. Mom and dad don't pay attention anymore...bro doesn't really care either. Good thread topic.

My parents consider Symphony X "good music", but they don't like it that much. My mom thinks the music is too 'filled' and too fast for her. Also, the weird time sigs work on her nerves . I took my dad to a Symphony X concert, but he couldn't say it was good because the sound was so horrible you couldn't even hear Russell. But I got my dad addicted to the Metropolis 2000 DVD by Dream Theater :)

This is what they're in to:

Deep Purple (Steve Morse owns)
Jimi Hendrix
Uriah Heep
Led Zep
Paul Rodgers
Guns 'n Roses
Metallica (Black Album only)
Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, and other 'guitar heroes'.

So, I don't think I should complain, they dig some of my music and I enjoy alot of theirs :-)

Who's heard this one :

'Oh so you listen to metal do ya, that would be like limp bizkit or that weirdo Maralyn Manson?'

'why yes' I say, 'I sit in a dark room taking these lyrics seriously, contemplating suicide whilst wearing copious amounts of black makeup'. Ahh my old friend sarcasm to the rescue!! shuts up most ignorant fuckas.

Back to the topic my family are the coolest, they listen to proggy stuff I like but Symphony X are a wee bit too heavy but they can validate it as good music.

My family doesn't seem to mind the proggier melodic side of metal, but I don't really think they are into me listening to death or black metal. However, they did for some reason think Suffocation's "Pierced from Within" was a good album when I played it in the car. :)
