i know we sound elitist, but the great metal bands have more talent that any other category of music except classical.
You`re clueless. Jazz and fusion takes MUCH more of an effort to play well.
As for my family: my mother is not much of a music-listener and is mostly into easy-listening stuff like Celine Dion, dinner jazz and so on.. I`m into a load of genres, but I don`t really expose her to it unless it`s something I guess she`ll like. I`ve played some classical pieces and some jazz stuff for her and she says she likes it, but she`s not that big a culture-appreciator anyway, being content to stay in the world of 8-4 workdays and TV-entertainment.
My father is EXTREMELY supportive of me and my music. I know he doesn`t dig all of it, but I know he loves Steely Dan, Debussy and Kurt Weill all thanks to me. He`s a brilliant jazz pianist himself, and anything with piano and expanded chords is okay in his book. In addition to that, he`s been very generous with monetary support and has allowed me to utilize a wealth of equipment which I still use in various forms to this day. I owe him the world.
My sister is mostly into jazz (standard stuff and some more avant-garde things) and pop/rock and is currently attending the annual Jazz festival in Molde. I don`t like everything she listens to, some stuff like Radiohead I dig thanks to her, others I could care less for. I don`t really expose her to any of my music, unless it`s something I know she`ll like. I played some Weather Report for her, and she went out and bought Heavy Weather immediately. Pretty cool.
The rest of my immediate family (aunts, uncles) consists mostly of musical imbeciles who don`t care for anything discordant or sonically challenging. Some of my cousins are into IDM, which I dig, but they`re the exception.
