What in tarnation is nu-metal...

TROY- nu= new urban or newly urbanized

or something similar
The 7 strings definitely don't determine what's nu or not and neither does it's birthdate
the thing is, people associate all the actual nu bands with 7 strings because it's a common thing. therefore when a band like nevermore applies 7 strings, you get a similar sound, or resemblance, or whatever

Seven strings have been used for much more than nu metal purposes. There are various jazz guitarists that use 7 string guitars. John Petrucci of Dream Theater, Satch and Vai have all used 7 string guitars.

But yeah...whatever happened to just enjoying music?

Its because that we are wrathful that artists that put out second rate "music" and they get attention over better music like Nevermore in the mass media.

How do you recognize black, death, thrash, etc. metal?
is not only about the instruments, but the feeling you get from the music as well. And EOR feels kinda numetal (Slipknot, Korn and others), don't let the solos and the skills fool you.

what are you talking about. explain to me how your getting a nu metal feel from EoR
when you listen to nu metal such as korn stain cold etc you don't feel anything its just a barage of notes that make no musical sense and has no tonal agreement in it, therefore it can easily said as being musicaly retarded and having no feeling in it at all
vai uses 7 string but keeps everything in key giving him the capability to add feeling into it
loomis isn't always exacly in key on EoR (except for the ballads) but he is still able to add feeling into it because everything is in key
nu metal has none of this and therefore has no feeling involved so what you are sayinf is complete ignorance

Nu-Metal, Mallcore, Death Metal, Thrash Metal...

Fucking catch phrases. If you talk to some asshole that starts throwing this shit around, call bullshit and walk.

People say crap like that so they can sound like "their in the know" and that they are "cool" or whatever. Its all just crap. Catch phrases can be helpful in generalizing different bands for organizational purposes or explaining things to people that are unfamiliar with the type of music, but its mostly just shit.

BTW, Nevermore is Nevermore, unique sounds. But hey, if your reading this you already know this stuff anyways lol.

I think the term nu-metal has come to be a symbol of paranoia.
Many 'metal' fans have grown up on this style of music, and have subsequently formed rituals, social interactions and traditions based on it.
When people box themselves in in this way, anything that deviates from their traditional practise is seen as a threat.
Now, a lot of heavy music deviates from the 'rules' of traditional metal. This deviation is to traditional metalheads intollerable to the extreme, to the point where anything that isn't traditional formula metal becomes the dreaded NU-METAL.
NU-METAL is a word used for fear.

We must remember these are only WORDS (which are inadequite to describe any form of music). It isn't music which is at fault, it is the narrow programmed cultural preconceptional judgements of people.

Is not fear for losing tradition, is fear for losing quality. But in the case of EOR, that didn't happen.

Thats like saying "ignore all the talent in the music and all the good musicianship and see it my way"

True. I don't want anyone to think exactly like me, I'll shut up now. Everybody has an opinion and must be respected.

Opinions don't have to be respected when they're from a buffoon.

Seriously though, where is the "nu" in EoR?

As for the categorization of music, the human brain deals with and overabundance of information by automatically categorizing things so that it can easily understand them. It's part of the reason some stereotypes (positive or negative ones) exsist. Thus labeling music will never cease, besides if someone asks you what a band sounds like, how are you supposed to explain unless you can categorize/compare them to another band? The lable "Nu-metal" has some uses in that, as RP said, it refers to 'newly urbanized' and has hip-hop influences. "True" metal heads then began associating nu-metal with crap metal. When this happened, anything that didn't fall within a narrow scope of what was viewed as true metal, was classified as nu metal whether it actually is or not. That's where the confusion comes in, and that's where fools like this unregistered guy get their misconceptions from
