Whats the deal?

Point taken - looking back up the thread, i've noticed how many people get lost on Devin just by listening to one project, or just one track.

All the people who I know who are into Devin came into the fold from all directions. I wonder how many people have listened to some of his work which "didn't catch them" and missed out on all the good stuff which they would have?

Devin would be so unbelievably huge if wasn't so damn versatile and dynamic

devy music is not easy music. you dont download a random song and listen it while you doing other stuff on your computer. you
rent or buy the album you think you will like the most , you sit down shut up and listen. just feel the genius then. and if its SYL
allow you to drift off your chair and bash your head into walls.

One of my friends keeps saying SYL sounds like fear factory.. I can see some similarities, but I still taKE OFFENCE TO HIS REMARKS. cOS THERE IS SO MUCH MORE INSIDE syl, WITH dEV AND HIS VOCAL HARMONIES RISING ABOVE THE NOISE OF GUITARS AND DRUMS AND KEYBOARDS.

I just realized my caps was on... I'm not gonna type all that again.. So I'll just leave it...

i made a post about this at digimortal.net under the alias bam margera. syl and ff are nothing alike. i honestly dont see any resemblence at all. metal clasifications by definition, would put them in the same catagory...but the music is nothing alike.

I see the similarities between the 2 bands... But SYL is just so much more...

It's kinda like getting fearfactory, putting another orchestra on top, plus a splash of insanity, one cup of anger, and a teaspoon of parody.

And THEN you put dev in front... SYL is EASY to prepare in your own home...

And here is one we prepared earlier.

i dunno, ive downloaded a lot of SYL stuff now...its alright...but something about the solo stuff just appeals to me a lot more. Ive never really been into SYL sounding stuff anyway..i like more precision from agrresive music. ill keep listening though.

For the record, I like Fear Factory much better than SYL but nowhere near as much as the solo work from Dev. I think Demanufacture and Digimortal are better albums than City. The reason for this isn't a talent issue as much as a formula issue. Fear Factory has the better formula to me. I'm gonna guess many on this board will disagree....maybe I should post that on the FF board now so I can make myself feel better after I read everyone's response to that here.....hehehe.

digimortal better than city ? demanufacture is great i must admit but even DM dont come close to city. digimortal better than city.
best joke i ever hearded. remind me of ignoring your musical opinions in the future.

It's relative really. I've felt for some time that the problem with Fear Factory is the restraint. Not just in terms of something like "they should be more heavy and brutal". It's like they found something and went towards it but not all the way. They're stuff is extremely frustrating for me because of that. They could be great but nah... gotta stop just short.

As for a possible reason for comparisons... some of those come from Dev himself. He has admitted to being HEAVILY influenced by at least Demanufacture more than once.

And as a minor note... SYL was a Dev project like Ocean Machine up until awhile after "City". It's now a band after years of evolution. However, previously... Jed, By, Gene were "hired guns" like Craig, Marty etc. The chief reason it was not Devin Townsend : Strapping Young Lad - City has to do with the fact that the label didn't see much commericial name recognition outside of Japan...

I keep hearing about devin...and i tried listening to some of his stuff, but frankly i wasnt impressed. Is he overated as im assuming, or did i just seriously miss something? someone recommend a bunch of songs (preferably different from eachother) that i can listen to...to give him another shot. thanks.

Ack! It's the "overrated" term once again! NO BAND ON ULTIMATE METAL IS OVERRATED! I can't find Devin cd's in any store... so how can he be overrated? These bands struggle to sell a few thousand copies in the states... maybe a little better in Europe... but it's still not anywhere near enough to use the "overrated" term. You may not like a certain band on UM... but none of these bands are overrated.

One of Fear Factory's problems was that they were always experimenting with ideas which didn't always work (like Remanufacture). They did a lot of very good stuff though and were a genre defining band.

Dev however is a genre unto himself.

fear factory used to be my favorite band. they started sucking after demanufacture. even though at first i loved obsolete (most of it) it was just so different from demanufacture.

digimortal sucked the warts off of hairy camel cock, however.

What word SHOULD someone use if they do not personally feel a band matches up to its reputation? With bands like Opeth and the various Dev projects, there is a lot of astounding material. However, some seemingly blindly heap praise onto every single track even if some were say unreleased for 5+ years due to a reason.
Yes, the overrating of Devin is not as grotesque as say Papa Roach. However, the term is still applicable. There is no need to be "politically correct" about it.

As for Kush and Devy Metal Loathing FF's nu-metal asses (hehe): It seems everyone agrees Demanu was FF's best album, this is good. I heard FF broke up, is this true? If so, I guess Demanu will ALWAYS be their best album. hehe. I like Obsolete, but not nearly as much as Demanu b/c the style changed a bit. With Digimortal they changed BACK to the Demanu style for the most part. Why would you two hate digimortal so much? Granted it's not Demanu, but better than Obsolete I thought. I mean yeah there's the Korn-like rap song with the cypress hill guy doing guest vocals, but that's just one song. Most songs on the album remind me of Demanufacture. For the record, I even like RE-manufacture, for what it was. Obviously it shouldn't be compared to any real album though. I used "Detox" earlier for the whole comparison when I hadn't heard City in awhile. I listened to City yesterday and remembered the other song that strongly reminds me of FF, and that's "AAA"

Not sure why you wanted this reminder, but here it is! ;)

PS. Hearded any new jokes lately? (Like sheep???)

Metal 88 .... this is the second retarded post i have read by you today.....

". I think Demanufacture and Digimortal are better albums than City. "

...... demanufacture is a great disc.... but digimortal.... *(slap)
are you trying to look like an ass... or are these really your musical opinions? and as Ocean bard said...

"remind me of ignoring your musical opinions in the future."

as far as digimortal to be dispointing i must say i was very dispointed the 1st time i listened to it indeed since i hearded it was more in the way of Demanufacture than obsolete and the 1st song i listened of was "back the fuck off" so i was very dispointed when i finally listened to that album. AAA dosent sound like any fear factory song i know (and i hearded all their stuff) but i also hearded that that the songs S.Y.L and in the rainy season sound like some slipknot so...
