What's with the Opeth backlash??

You know....I recall very clearly when I saw tons of Venom shirts in Sam Goody, Spencer Gifts, Waxie Maxie. They were the token "cool" black metal band or whatever you want to call them now.

I'm going on 19 & have owned slayer cd,etc.. since 12. No way opeth is a gateway band. If hearing the band when first getting into metal I would have thought they sucked dick. I'm also a lot more mature of a guitarist so I think to a certain extent that reflects my music taste now. I also use to wear metal shirts all the time rarely wearing them now. It's not about 'metal' but music.

Gateway bands

slayer,sepultura,cannibal corpse,fear factoryetc....

Opeth was an entry band for me... I guess it was just the timing or something. I haven't been into extreme Metal for very long... like three or four years tops.

I thought I was the only person that had this opinion. I have only heard Ghost Reveries, and I bought the album only ever heard The Grand Conjuration or whatever its called. Im more into melodic trash ("cave yer fucking head in") type music, and was extremely disappointed
in this album. I might get around to listening to earlier stuff at some point.

If you only own one Opeth album, it should be Morningrise.

If Opeth is "entry level," so's Iron Maiden. Point being, who gives a fuck? It's not like I'm gonna be listening to Sleep's Dopesmoker ALL the time....

I've made it a point not to overplay Ghost Reveries, or any other Opeth album, for that matter. Little trick I picked up along the way: don't play the shit out of something if you don't want to get bored with it.

I will say that Ghost Reveries may be a slight dip in quality, IMO. Also, that all their records get a bit samey. But it's a hell of a formula!

If Opeth is a smidge of a gimmick band, it's not like they exploded onto the scene to take over junior highs everywhere, a la Kittie. I can't think of a band that has laid more serious groundwork, building a grassroots following the right way, before making a bid for "success," if that's what we're seeing.

People are whining about Opeth just because too many "other people" are getting into them, right? This is just straight-up scenester elitism, right??

You say it like its a bad thing? Thats the great thing about elitism, watch all the little emo/metalcore kids cry and try to put there point of view forward, when i really dont give a shit. :)

Yes, Iron Maiden is an entry level band.

Opeth was my "entry level" band.

I regarded them as gods for the first 6 months from whence I first heard them.

However you could say I played them so much I got sick of them. To the point that when Ghost Reveries came out ALL that I COULD hear were recycled solos and progressions, worn-out ideas and sometimes just plain boring passages.

Moral of the story: I listened to Opeth so much they've turned to shit.

Morningrise is brilliant, but still has nothing on Orchid.

..though this section in Advent is fucking brilliant.

3:18 to 4:21

Only opeth would think of something this good.

Is that the section with the weird bass line? The whole song is great, nonetheless. And I still stand by what I posted earlier. Even if I like the music, I get tired of hearing "OMG Opeth is teh geatest evuh d00d!!!"

Riggghhttt... But again, who gives a fuck? Does that make Maiden a less valuable band?? I don't think so...

So I guess you think accessibility precludes quality. Fair enough. Not me.
