What's with the Opeth backlash??

Speaking of Venom(who it's KEWL TO LIKE!). I remember on another message board someone went into walmart with their kids & wife wearing a Venom shirt. A little ways into the store they were asked to leave.

Riggghhttt... But again, who gives a fuck? Does that make Maiden a less valuable band?? I don't think so...

So I guess you think accessibility precludes quality. Fair enough. Not me.

And why would this thread be closed??

At what point did anyone say that due to the fact that Iron Maiden is an entry level, they are "less valuable"? Why try and read an argument into what people say. You are an idiot.

Opeth may be overrated in the way that some people think they're the best metal band ever. however, they're still ridiculously superior to 90% of all that generic crap bands of today. there are not many bands showing a similar level of songwriting, in my opinion. Now, that Ghost Reveries is out, which shows some more "modern" influences, everyone's like "omg, Opeth sucks!"...please name some better bands, I'm interested! I keep on searching but it's damn hard to find metal bands as good and _mature_ as Opeth.
Personally, I clearly prefer Blackwater Park/Still Life/MAYH over GR, but it's still a great album.

That must have been a bible-belt Wal-Mart, because the last time I was in White-trash-mart around here I was wearing a t-shirt with about 30 separate phrases with the word "fuck" printed all over it. Oddly enough, however, my high school principal pulled me out of class for an emergency meeting with my parents because I was wearing a Metallica t-shirt(:tickled: :tickled: :tickled: ). He was concerned that I was involved in demonic worship. It's amazing what a difference 12 years and 150 miles make.

Opeth wernt an entry level band for me at the time I listened to alot of heavy music with Black metal growls and at first I didnt like opeths growls it took me a while to get into them and im still not blown away by them. They are fun to listen to and in the right mood they give off a great feeling while listening to the CDs but all in all not an amazing all hail Mikael GOD of black metal and guitar band they are average.

People just don't like band shirts period. I use to go to school not sure if I would be kicked out or not. Acouple people I use to know say i would probably do the first school shooting. I don't even think i look intimidating but when you're wearing a slayer, morbid angel shirt people literally think you want to slay them or something... I'm just a guitarist that's all. I don't want to blow up the town. One time I had to flip my shirt inside out at school.

Go into an FYE wearing a band shirt... not one worker will ask you if you need help. Go wearing a regular shirt and semi attractive female will ask you if you need help finding a cd. Shirts really make a difference in how people percieve you regardless where you are.

I don't always like to be percieved as a threat you know.

I went into a Wal-Mart once also wearing a Venom shirt.:OMG:
They didn't kick me out, but the cashier was like "Welcome To Hell? Oh, that's nice" and then gave me a stupid look. So I stabbed him in the fucking throat and left him bleeding.

Must be an American thing. I've worn band shirts for ages and never had any negative remarks. Though none of the shirts I have are particularly offensive anyway. People might be slightly less likely to come up to me than if I were wearing a shirt and tie and had a normal haircut. But then I am fairly anti-social and quite like it that way.

And one of the people I hang out with a lot at college is a devout Catholic so I can't look that scary...

[edit: oh yeah, to clarify, I live in the Netherlands]

One time at Walmart I saw a fat ass cashier that had no legs sitting in a weird wheechair. It must suck for them to have no legs but since they're working at walmart till their death atleast they get to sit down the whole time... it's like fate. That fat fuck does not have to stand up while working

My boyfriend doesn't really like when I wear my band shirts, so I don't wear them much anymore..

However, he says it would be great if I got enormous gauges, wore sweatshirts with the hood up, and learned how to mosh. *rolls eyes*

I've never had any negative comments. I have a Dark funeral t-shirt with the Diabolis Interium album cover on front with "Diabolis Interium" written on it, of course. - "The Devil Within/Inside", I guess it can't affend people it they don't know what it means...? But then again, I live in Canada so religion isn't as big of a problem as in the US.

By merit of Opeth being one of the first handful of bands that people get into these days, they are absolutely and unequivically an entry level band. ;)

When i think of an entry level band, i think of a band that i would have non metal fans listen to to get them into metal....

i would never give a first time metal listener a band with death metal vocals, even if they like the music (extreme or soft). people, in general, just dont like those vocals. i have friends who like some opeth "parts" in their songs, but they always say the same thing in the end, being "i like the music, i dont like the vocals at all."

pantera and fear factory (except for soanm) are bands that i would consider entry level...

alas, in the end...who gives a shit.

That's hilarious, considering I've gotten a lot of rap and hip hop loving girls in my school to like Opeth. They're unquestionably entry level material. There's no reason to deny it. I don't see how this is a bad thing.

Actually bands like slayer, sepultura, fear facory,etc... are still gateway bands & will be for a long time. I'm not sure on status but these bands are probably still very big like say in 98 or whatever. I know because I have a younger sister who recently got into metal by bands like this and nu-metal(a lot of people get into heavier music this way). I'm sure their are some other mature metal bands that get people into metal besides opeth regardless. I listen to opeth & my sisters friends(into hip hop),one of her friends older sister(my age) still think i'm a weirdo & it's devil music so it can't be as accecible as people make it out to be. It's still very unconvential in a metal sence compared to other well known bands.

I just can't picture people not into heavier music hearing opeth with growling vocals and being like OMG I like metal. People not into heavy music that get into opeth are probably musicians. If someone likes opeth having trouble getting into some more underground stuff maybe it's just not musical enough for them.

You fucking choad-smoker. If you can't tell that people calling Opeth "an entry level band" is something of a putdown, you need to pull your head out of your ass.

Goddamn cock-socket.
