i couldnt care less if someone d/l's the album or buys it, doesnt bother me at all. and as for the ''fan'' crap, well i couldnt care less whatever people label you, what difference does it make.

And as for the whole file downloading thing, people can talk it to death, but no one will change their mind, and no one will EVER be able to determine if mp3's hurt or help Opeth. There are too many factors to calculate. The whole discussion is a waste of time, IMO.

no its not.
me for example i'm glad with mp3. it helps you to check out many bands. i wouldnt had bought as many albums without mp3.
especially for small bands; you cant deny it works only positive for them. people start talking, could easily achieve their music etc...

Perhaps you're right, but... the essence of what I'm saying (as usual) is being missed here. There's nothing wrong with downloading songs to see if you like them (I have done so myself), it's when people DON'T buy the record that bothers me (and plenty of other people, like, for example, Maynard James Keenan and The Queens of the Stone Age; both of whom have said in interviews that while they have nothing against the internet or Mp3, it hurts them when people don't buy their records because that's the only way they make money - QOTSA even went so far as to address those people who call themselves fans without buying records, saying, "...it's the ultimate fuck you... you're no fans of ours.")

Now, some of you may not like TOOL or QOTSA and so you'll say, "well I don't care what they think, they suck", which is your prerogative. BUT, what this demonstrates is that many musicians have contracts (as in the case of MJK at the time of his interview) that specify catalog sales as the primary source of income from the record company. Bands very often don't see jack from tour ticket sales - they go on tour to promote the record so that people will buy it so that they'll actually make some money!

I'm probably going to get flamed even more now... I'm sure I'll be told that it's all been said and heard before, I'm not saying anything new, don't I think I'm a knowitall, or I must be Lars Ulrich.

I'm not trying to be a knowitall, I am just trying to explain WHY I said that I believe in buying records. sheesh.

There is a difference between being a fan of the music and being a fan of the band. It is entirely NOT hypocritical to love the songs while hating the people who made it.

Anyway, i wont be downloading it because i enjoy things more when i get to the cd in my hands, and i do try and support my favourite bands, though money and availability of cds often make that hard.

exactly, i would have never of heard of opeth, fan for 5 years now and still going, and payed my dues so to speak, have the albums, two copies of BWP the original and the delux, and two copies of deliverance, one for me and one for my GF, will have two copies of damnation too for the same purposes, so shoot me i downloaded some songs, but guess what, i have funded the band i spent almost $400 traveling to see them in cleveland, $40 for the tickets, and $55 on merch, so if thats not paying the band what is? i mean personally i wish bands would stop complaining about it, i mean for fucks sake metallicas album sales went UP while they were bitching about napster, so did dr. dre, eminem, and other bands, there are litterally 300+ bands that i have heard about via napster/kazaa and the internet that i would have never heard otherwise so...... if bands want to sell albums they should leave kazaa (and others) alone IMO, if they want to go down the drain like metallica bitch about it, just my $.02 take it or leave it

i seem to remember Mikael himself encouraging the d/l of the 2 BWP bonus tracks. just making an observation.

That's because he knew a lot of us had already bought the first edition of Blackwater Park, and was kind enough not to suggest that we go buy the entire album again just for two tracks. But I doubt he would encourage anyone to simply download their albums and not buy them.

I am quite impulsive, so when I want something, I want it now. Not tomorrow, or the day after, and certainly not next week. So After I heard one Opeth song, I wanted all of their albums. So I went to AudioGalaxy (RIP >:-( ), and downloaded them. I listened to them one at a time within a week, and hated them. After an extended period of time, I pulled them out, wiped the inch of dust from the cases, and listened to them, one album at a time within a week while going to sleep, (when I listen to music the deepest), and I totally got into them. Then on payday I went to the Newbury Comics and purchased the three albums that they had in stock. After about a month of doing this, I acquired the remaining (at the time) two.

I am a collector of music, so if it is good, I NEED the rest of the package. Like the liner notes. And the professionally packaged material.


I realize that noone really cares about my last post, I just felt compelled to write it out of boredom with the topic of downloading, especially in a negative manner. The fact is, there are always going to be people who rip other people off in one way or another, there is nothing that can be done about it.

That goes both ways though, the consumer often gets ripped off by the artist. (In my humble opinion), I felt raped and pillaged after purchasing Reroute to Remain. Oh my god!! (Just my opinion). I think AudioGalaxy was finished at that point...

which eliminates the point of putting the 2cd edition out in the first place then doesnt it. another idea might have been to release it as a cheap priced single rather than a re-release. or something cool and exspensive like 'Soul Wax' did a few years ago and give a mix of b-sides and unreleased stuff to all the people who subscibed to their mailing list...

anywho personaly i think cds should be made cheaper (well they're a couple pounds more exspensive in Britain than the US for a start) or wages should be raised

To my knowledge it was a decision by the record company which Mikael disagreed with (as he did with all the rereleases so soon after they were first released). Thats why you've got the cd while the band member tells people to download the tracks instead.

mikeal said that the MFN was going to rerelease BWP anyway,even if the band was against the idea.Which they were.so instead of telling the fans to boycott the album,they did the smart thing and made the package more speacial so that you would get your moneys worth.
