who did you enlighten today?

@Siren: The problem is I think of it (Auctioned) as the most 'beyond-the-borderline-song' (musically speaking, of course) DT have ever made (except maybe Archetype :) ) I was searching for, I won't say a typical (in that case I probably could pass R.T. Hedon or The Emptiness from which I fed), but at least a not-too-atypical-for-DT-standards song. Unfortunately maybe rahve is right, borderline-songs, stimulating as they can be, are probably not a good choice for first listening. Oh, well, whatever, one way or the other R.T. is here now, so maybe something good came out of it, after all :D Don't surrender, Siren, insist (maybe next time, if I can suggest, with Feast of Burden or At loss for words, though I personally would never chose a first listening from Haven), and next time, I also suggest, with lyrics at hand ;) and maybe also with some comments and lyricanalysis. Don't lose hope after only one failed attempt :)

Alfred

@Alfred: Nah, I don't surrender that easily ;) A good chance would be "accidentaly" playing DT songs when friends are home :D
I also plan to start carrying my cds with me at the uni library (since music seems to be helping my concentration). This could be a chance to make more people listen to this kind of music.

@Siren: Terror at the library? Everybody getting out quickly, and the greek army surrounding the whole building to catch you. You'll be a nice runaway, then.

Btw: My neighbours are listening DT stuff every day, am I chupi?

i usually don't bother with telling people to listen to some metal if i'm not sure whether this will fall on fertile ground. too many just push everything away that contains growls, and you can't change them in a minute. but i lended my haven copy our guitarist this friday, and i think he'll like it. he saw dt on accident on wacken last year, but couldn't remember much of it since he did not concentrate (fool!). but he listens to in flames, children of bodom and such... maybe there is a chance.

well vulture, hes not a total lost cause, he still listens to good music, but it takes that extra sense to truely appreciate DTs work ;)

Well, this is an old story, but anyways...

Back in 1997 when The Mind's I was released a young friend of mine was at my home and while we talked and such, the album was playing in the background. He didn't pay much attention to it, until the intro for Insanity's Crescendo started and he said with a mischievous face: "Hey, I can hear the guitars - all way through I thought it was only machine guns!"  :)

Well, he's a DT fan nowadays.

Maybe because they were the two wrong ones. Have you ever tried to use the third one only, to spare resources? :)
@alfred [...] keep in mind that being golden are bound to like some disco music....not metal!
Oh, gosh, you're right, I had forgotten gold is quite a subgenre of plastic :)

most likely a nice rundown, if they'll surround the building blocking every exit to the poor Siren :D

> 4. one would wonder why you got married in the first place: i couldn't spend a w-e with someone who don't like, say, auctioned. i presume when you got married projector wasn't around yet, but that's not really the point. :p

:err:

> however, it seems to me he might just be a little slow to catch up with what you might come up with. maybe with time it'll happen the same as with *sighs* metallica gigs.

or maybe it's because he likes bands that have already matured. (?) you know, like "found themselves" their "true identity" and whatnot. i knew listing Metallica would get a response from you. :p i was going to write Iron Maiden but he went with me to most IM shows...up until about 1988 anyway. (ehm, there goes my "mature" theory?!?) he's gone to see IM since, too, but not with me. :) seriously though, i'm fairly certain he didn't really listen to the tapes i gave him. i forewarned him to keep an open mind about the vocals but i don't think it worked.

>5. i don't like that much sweet stuff. can't we bet something else? :)

hey Villain! Nice to see that someone noticed me on that board! Nice to see you again! Well, I was busy and haven't been on my comp. very much during the last weeks...

but here I am!

And that board seem to be pretty fine! people are interacting a lot more than it was!

I gave all DT discography to a friend last week to listen to it (he's already into metal). He said he liked, but i don't think he managed to really get into them :/ I'll have to work on it a bit more..

And yesterday, i put some DT songs to some friends that came home, especially cause one of them seemed to be interested (she just started getting into metal and she's really open minded). I played Auctioned, Lethe and Through Ebony Archways. She asked me to write her a cd with "introductory" songs to metal :)

I will also write another cd for another friend, containing some DT songs (those with female vocals), but there's not much chance there.

Plz someone suggest some songs i should include for the open-minded friend, i really want to give her good directions (she likes HIM now :p)

Siren (dug way too far for this thread ;))

hm... so , if she's into HIM ,maybe some songs from Projector to start with, not that it has any connection but it just feels right to me. I have actually made a compilation DT cd for me about a year ago. This is the usual "introductory" cd I give to friends. :loco: The tracklist:
1.Punish My Heaven
2.Scythe, Rage and Roses
3.FreeCard
4.Of Chaos and Eternal Light
5.Dreamlore Degenerate
6.Exposure
7.Midway Through Infinity
8.The sun fired blanks
9.Haven
10.Insanity's Crescendo
11.On Your Time
12.Hedon
13.Tongues
14.Lethe
15.At Loss for Words (great last song!)

I even had a cover made by combining elemets of several DT album covers, but I dont think I have it in my PC anymore...

As far as the song selection is concerned, of course it depends on lots of things, for example how into metal one already is. I mean you can't really fill a CD with songs like Midway through infinity for example. Maybe prokector is a bit more friendly in terms of the clean vocals.

anyway, tell me what u think

Hmmm metal in general, she wants both lighter and heavier songs included, but not too harsh cause it's just the beginning. She really liked Through Ebony Archways, i won't put only DT songs though.
As far as DT is concerned i'm thinking of putting Auctioned, Lethe, Through Ebony Archways, Hedon and some more (this is where i need the help).

Siren :)))

I would suggest a wider range of bands: Put on some In Flames, perhaps sth like "Resin" or "Bullet Ride", or "Gyroscope", " Moonshield", "Jester Script Transfigured".

Then sth like Sentenced, which she should like very much if she is into HIM. It is more "metal", but still similar enough to HIM.

Then perhaps sth by the middle Paradise Lost, perhaps sth from "Dracoonian Times".

The slower hypocrisy songs would fit, too. ("Roswell 47", "Fractured Millennium", "Inquire within", "Request Denied").

And tehn, the infamous Metallica ballads: "The Unforgiven" and "Nothing else...".

I do not know, but does she/do you want sth more traditional as well?!? Some "metal" classics?!?

I dont see a point in putting these famous ballads as theres no way she has never listened to them.

As far as the extra DT songs are concernted I would _definitely_ vote for Insanity's crescendo and At a loss for words, two of the most complete DT songs IMHO

What else now... If you're looking for something not as hard and really emotional, you can put something from 3rd and the mortal, Something from The Gathering (from the Mandyllion CD!). Or anathema!! from silent enigma or from Judgement CDs...

Something from Arcturus perhaps? From the new one (THe Sham Mirrors), which is more "user friendly" than LMI... Another one I would recommend is Therion, and particularly "To Megatherion" and "INvocation of Naamah". These tend to impress newbies, as they are more symphonic which is always cool.

If you want something more classic, try Nightwish and Rhapsody I guess...

if she likes him she might really dig sentenced and charon. then you could try to add some older sentenced song and introduce her to melodic death metal starting from there. :)

rahvin. (always likes when ppl looks very far to find his posts)

Hmm i already have enough material to fill 5 cds me thinks :p The only problem is i would love to put in some of the bands suggested above, but i have nothing from them :( (and i would like to dig them myself too).
I will do my best and tell you the outcome :D
