Who is the "oddball" band this year?

I believe Freak Kitchen would be the oddball in any lineup.

That being said, I can't wait to see them. :)

I honestly feel bad for those folks who can't deal with harsh vocals.

I honestly feel bad for anyone who judges music on what they feel it "should" sound like, rather than what it does sound like. This goes not only for the death vocal abhorers, but also for the prog nerds who think all progressive bands should sound like Dream Theater, and the power metal nerds who think all power metal bands should sound like Helloween.

Bob - Can I be your friend??? This is my argument for years and years.

Amen, brother! What's the difference listening to a European person singing "clean" vocals I can't understand or a band "growling" that I can't understand? Great music is great music no matter the vocal stylings.:headbang:

I agree that Edguy is going more in that direction lately but I don;t see a band this year being like that at all.
Once upon a time a long time ago in a time known as the 1980's there lived a popular singer by the name of Al. Now Al was very popular at the time, and had millions of fans around the world. Al, however, was not rich and famous because of his musical prowess, but for his musical comedy. You see, what Al would do was adapt funny lyrics to popular songs of the time, which many people considered somewhat “Weird,” but also hilarious by many.

Officially the funny lyrics were called satire, and Weird Al’s antics had a bit of a spillover effect on other artists of the day. For example a little known band at the time featuring two brothers and some guy named Dave released an album called Diver Down with a rendition of Happy Trails at the end of it.

The trend would continue into the 1990’s with a Thrash band by the name of Scatterbrain, who were known for their satirical lyrics. Three other bands would arise from later in this era: White Trash, Ugly Kid Joe, and Freak Kitchen.

The three bands had some musical talent- Ugly Kid Joe’s “Menace To Sobriety” had considerations for 1995’s album of the year- and all where known for their “silly” lyrics. Of the three only one survives today, and that band will be playing at ProgPower VII.

Freak Kitchen are what they are. Songs like "My New Haircut," "Porno Daddy," "Supermodel Baby," and "Jerk" are prime examples. You may choose to call their lyrics satire or humor. If you don’t like their music, and I don’t, silly, dumb, or stupid works just fine. Perhaps Glenn’s description of FK as “Prog/Fucked-up metal” works best, because then you can apply the “Fucked-up” part however it works for you.

What about people who just simply don't like cookie vocals? No reason to feel bad for them, just like I don't feel bad for those who dislike or take shots at Freaak Kitchen. To each their own. :) Now if we're talking PoS, then it's a different story! :heh:

"Crop circles are Chuck Norris' way of telling the world that sometimes corn needs to lie the fuck down."

That's the best one yet.

Freak Kitchen is easily the oddball. On the forum's advise I picked up Dead Soul Man and have really enjoyed it. I have a feeling I'll be holding seats while they are on.

Did you pick up the internet only cd "Junk Tooth" yet?
Varying quality to the demos, but some real good guitar playing.
