Why Opeth are unique/original

When I first listened to Opeth (which btw was quite recently) I had this inexplicable impression that I know this music very well, that I've listened to it many times before, like it was my fav band in my previous life or what. Has it happened to any of you?

This happened to me with Damnation, and I can't remember, but I think some of Blackwater Park, as well as a lot of Katatonia songs, and some songs from Dan Swano's Nightingale and Unicorn projects. It's really weird, and I can't really begin to explain it. It's pretty interesting, though.

Just to raise a controversial question: is the combination of musical styles to create a new style not true originality, but recombinance?

Then what is true originality? Classical music would be considered the apex of recombinance then, as all of the ideas are based off a strict set of guidelines and 'logical' progressions. Most chord progressions have been used before in alternately arranged forms, even the most composite forms of music when taken apart show re-used ideas.

Heres what I have to say, Listen to the music and find out! n00b. Listening to Opeth one time will tell you why they own every other band that has ever existed.

dude, look at my name...i recognize that i have been on this forum way longer than you...but yah, it did only take me one time to realize...

i just wanted to hear what you guys/gals had to say.

i think that they do a good job avoiding cliches. they don't do a lot of stuff that we hear in other bands...such as..(boring same old power chord progressions, "typical" metal guitar solos, blastbeats, morbid lyrics, etc...) and i think that they incorporate beauty in all of their music...even the most evil and brutal parts....the list is endless for me....
