Depending on how far you go south, Asheville, North Carolina has a good underground metal scene, as does Savannah, Georgia. Spartanburg, South Carolina has a good bar/venue in Ground Zero. Huntington, WV has had a lot of decent acts roll through in the past year or so, but there's not much market there for anything not hardcore or death metal.
