considering the increasing amount of attention this game is getting more or less everywhere - and considering i've been sucked in too - i wanted to give people an opportunity to discuss everything game-related without derailing other threads.

all those interested are free to discuss whatever they want about wow. i'll just ask you to follow a couple of simple rules:

- screenshots are welcome, but please post thumbnails (imageshack is the preferred solution) as nobody likes to scroll left to right to read text;

- don't fuck up the thread if you hate/have never played/don't know what it is/are sabotaging wow. i understand many users will not give a flying flipper about this topic, but there's plenty of other topics elsewhere to discuss.

and now on to the good stuff. the idea is to form a guild of dt forum regulars who play the game. there might not be enough to even start one, so you're free to draw in one or two other people each if you so desire. we could probably give it a name akin to "dark tranquillity" (but i don't know what blizzard's rules are about copyrighted names) and post everything about our raids here. i have no limitations of server, but anyone who does should say so and we'll try to pick one which could work for everybody. currently, i mostly play on stonemaul (a lvl 30 human warlock named blackcurrant) and i'm more interested in alliance than horde (only because i remember the quests and first instances better, and i'm more documented on the subject), but i can roll whatever everyone wants, no limitations.

also, i should point out that i'm a horrible noob and an awful player of any game ever conceived, so it will take a lot of patience for you to actually teach me stuff.

for instance, i still use the basic user interface that comes with the game. i need suggestions/opinions about the ever popular titan bars, flexbar, and so on.

edit: added transparent poll to see who's playing.

check the future dark tranquillity forum guildies out on SPINEBREAKER (US PVP SERVER, accessible if you bought the u.s. version of the software)
hitori is... Krimhielt (night elf druid)
kovenant84 is... Kovenant (human warrior)
rahvin is... Blackcurrant (human warlock)
plintus is... Plintus (night elf hunter)
qsilver is... Svång (dwarf priest)

A few notes:

If we all roll new chars on a server to balance it out, or somesuch, we'll have to check to see if the guild name is already taken. Believe it or not, "Dark Tranquillity" was a guild on the, now full, server Warsong as early as last December. Supposedly (from what I hear from my brother, who talked to a member) it was actually based around band fandom. Unfortunately, I may be the only one here who had a character on that server prior to its closing.

I'm always a bigger fan of horde than alliance, just because, but I'm fine with starting on either side. I've (literally) gone through the first 20 levels of orc/troll about 20 times, so I'm pretty well versed there. The only races I haven't played all that much are Night Elves, Gnomes, Tauren, and Undead (though they hardly count, as my lvl 56 is undead).

I think, before I get ahead of myself here, that we should take a poll of how many people here have WoW, first off :p So far, I count Rahv, Hitori, Li, and myself. That's hardly a guild right there, though it could make a pretty good 5 man group :)

And watch out for me - i'm literally obsessed with rpgs. You'll find me making recommendations left and right about everything from what skill/class/race combos everyone should be to make a good group, to proper instance running protocols. I'm not an expert. I just think I am.

@rahv - I'm currently running the Insomniax 1.7 beta compilation from ui.worldofwar.net, with the complete CT Mod as well (for some reason, the compilation leaves some bits of CT Mod out). I don't need anywhere near the number of things that come in the compilation, but it's a good starting point.

I too prefer alliance, and have 2 characters on Stonemaul. I'd rather keep playing there, but I can adapt. My firetree horde character, despite having a super cool name and mohawk, is an undead warlock and I don't feel so comfortable being a warlock. I might go back to being a druid or priest.

Ah, and I've seen a Dark Tranquillity guild already, too.

Maybe we aren't enough after all. so I urge all forumers to buy the american version of WoW, heh. my brother can join our guild, but then again, we all sort of live in different continents which could be a problem as for playing dates.

ah and while I don't consider myself a noob, I'm not hardcore enough to get a different interface or do anything too fancy. I lose enough time playing wow or talking about wow already as it is :p

I could get my bro to at least make a char to help form the guild, but I doubt he'd play - he's not an 'alt' kinda player. He gets completely absorbed by the storylines, and refuses to have more than one character from each starting zone.

I'd be fine starting alliance, if everyone else is. I'll do some research tonight, find a really low population pvp server that we can dominate and mold to our whims.

Honestly, I hadn't thought of the timing issues, hehe. My lvl 56 was in a guild on Lightning's Blade, and we (me and gf) used to team up with a couple in SoCal from our guild to dominate the BG's. The time issue was only really noticable in that we got to play for about 2 hours before they got back from work, and we usually went to sleep about 3 hours before they did. Damn time zones.

I'm wondering now if any of DT themselves play WoW? I'm glad if they don't, actually. I would like to see another album from them in... oh, ever. :p

we can try a variation on the name, like "niklas my guide" or something. ;)

and this thread will magically have a poll in a few minutes. ;)

yeah, that's why i was hoping for some additions from the ones who are already participating. i can try and get a couple of friends in, for instance. let's say that i'd just feel uncomfortable playing with total strangers with no connection to either the board or someone from the board.

wonderful. supposing that my moderator status here gives me powers beyond human belief (and it does. oh, it does.), i hereby decree you'll be the founder/leader of the guild. if noone opposes, of course. all i know is i need to learn. a lot.

i'll download it tomorrow, but in the meantime... picz please?

@hitori: as for playing time, it depends how many people are there, really. if there's 25-30 of us, we only need the whole group for big lvl 60 raids (am i right, kov?), so if the players are a well-mixed bunch, there could almost always be 4-5 online to take care of more trivial quests or rule the battlegrounds.

@kov: are you sure we want a low-population server? what about becoming gods in pvp? :p (thus spake the guy who only ever killed 2 horde).
also, i know for a fact mikael and martin b are gamers. it seems unlikely that they won't be anywhere on wow... let's give 'em time and maybe they'll come into the open to patronize our guild. :)

more details: i'm an undead mage on firetree, name is tyresias.

Wow, leader of the guild? <Glee> Thank you, oh wonderful moderator. :)

True, you only need 40 man raid groups for the very very endgame instances. Otherwise, ad hoc groups form in the BattleGrounds, but no other raid groups are needed. I've never needed more than a 5-man team for anything else.

I'll try and post some screenshots later on today (after 9pm EST) when I get back from class. I agree that a well-mixed bunch performs best... which is where I get to be pretty scary. I'll start planning out our uber-1337 strike force, even down to the talents people should take, and it'll just go downhill from there.

And I know Mikael and Martin are gamers, that's why I asked. I'm just imagining what they'd be :p

As of right now, it looks like this will be an alliance guild if we start on a new server. (Though we could all headbang if we were undead...) I'll start looking around to see which look good. Only reason I mentioned small server was because of how the PvP ranking works. It's a comparison between yourself and every other person on the server. Therefore, the person who BG's the most, and has been doing so since day 1, will invariably be the top of the heap, and all the others who aren't quite as 1337 as him will be the higher ranks below that. Most larger servers, it's impossible to gain more than 4 ranks or so if you're a casual gamer - i.e., if you work/have a life outside WoW, which I'm pretty sure we all do.

I don't necessarily mean that we'll aim to dominate in PvP right away, but it might be fun eventually. And as far as playing with strangers, I just lucked out that my guild on Lightning's Blade happened to be a bunch of really really cool people. (one of them bought me my mount) I'd prefer if we at least kinda knew everyone in our new guild.

Anywho... back to work for me.

Why does Rahvin sound like Misanthrope? :err:

I hated how they tried to combine RPG with RTS and failed so miserably -- and how people (i.e. fans of the game) fail to see this. Take StarCraft, for example. It is clearly RTS, but certain trigger maps place the player in possession of a limited number of non-worker units (thus being unable to build a base) and give the player one or more missions. This is RPG, and it works just fine (especially because role-playing is supposedly the type of game with most freedom to do just about anything; trigger-map builders can virtually do anything with the enormous combination of triggers available and a little bit of imagination). But, when you try to merge Diablo with RTS --a game in which you are given set quests to kill set monsters and get set awards (by set i mean that they are already determined, programmed or set in the game; in Diablo II, if you kill Andariel you invariably go to Lut Gholein, and no other possibility exists, unless you stay in Act I and fool around, which would stop the progress of the storyline)-- with RTS --commanding multiple units at once and running a city or an empire-- and then patch every other day to put tons of things into the game just so it doesn't look too much like Diablo-in-Warcraft, things just don't turn out as good.

It's not that hard to make a computer RPG with virtually unlimited possibilities (take a very large number of possibilities and expand them with patches and expansion sets): just think of Morrowind PC.

Note: All of this is merely my opinion. It is not to be taken as literal fact, and thus i am not to be buried under a mountain of "you are wrong because ___"s.

You are making me buy that game right these moments :D

Yay, what did I made little upgrade for then?

brb...

I was going to say, lol. I've never heard of anyone out and out hating WoW. Hell, even my gf tolerated it, and she hates all games. (But then, she said it was because quests reminded her of homework...)

I was just thinking - we need a cool guild name. Any suggestions? And should we all have names with a DT theme? :p (Yes, I've done this before - my orc hunter is named Hedon... his pet is Nihil)

Still debating over Horde v. Alliance - don't want my choice to lock everyone into something, but at the same time... I think it basically boils down to if anyone wants to be a Shaman or a Paladin. That's basically, I think, what should decide it.

Naw... just the tacos and burritos I've been farting out smells pretty awful.

so, are we all going to a new server and getting new characters then?

i've never even been to bg haha

Seems so. I think otherwise we'll be 4-5 people at lvl 1, with a lvl 30+ waiting for us :p

~kov.

I've been thinking of guild names... maybe after songs? "Chaos and Eternal Night" sounds cool :)
(Infinitely better than "Fantastically Awesome GuyS" [yes, real guild])

So I'm thinking Spinebreaker or Dragonmaw. They seem like suitably metal names. Lemme know if anyone has a char there already.

If you want to reach me, I'll be on Stonemaul probably all night - look for "Incorporeal", NE rogue.

And lets here some input on Ally v. Horde :D

LMAO.

Guild name related to Tranquillity? How about "Final resistance", "Suicidal Angels" or "Crimson winds"? I know, probably very unoriginal, but then it's all my sleepy brain can come up with right now. :\

Of course, you don't have to consider my suggestions (it would be nice, though). =P
