Bahrain
This is from me and a bunch of metal-deprived friends here in the middle east (specifically; Bahrain if u've heard of it). This is a message from us to Opeth demanding attention in this dark, reputation-damaged corner of the world! When are you finally gonna see through the stereotypical image created for us by the West which has for years deprived us of any real entertainment? We are NOT a bunch of radical savages who snarl in the face of anything new, as Western Media would have you believe. True, we have a group of ignorant assholes who have mis-used Islam as as a tool to combat all progress which they would think is ungodly or sacrilegous; but that applies to all social groups on this planet. The only difference with us that we have an enemy with a personal vandetta against us; a formidable opponent with access to world-media who feels that our presence and progress means the inevitable downfall of his empire. And in the meantime, we sit here lamenting our tiresome luck that no open-minded musical institution (i.e. Opeth !) will ever honor us with even a simple tour to satisfy our ever-growing yearning and lust for all that is artistic and genuine. I hereby place forward a request for opeth to grace our humble abode and honor us with a visit, only then will u witness our true legendary arabian hospitality! Sure it seems farfetched i cant believe im actually bothering to write this and post it, but i guess someone has to make the first move so hopefully this will a first in one of many advances to try and actually get a real metal band to tour the middle east. Set an example to others Opeth,, show how much u care about ur fans by taking the 1st step.

Cheers.
Mohammed and many many others

hello and welcome,

not to burst your bubble, but I'm guessing heavy metal is not nearly as popular in the middle east as it is in America, Europe, and the rest of the west. At this point, Opeth has made it clear that their goal is to get their music out to as many people as possible, so they are more likely to tour places where they think they will be able to attract large numbers of fans. I don't know much about bahrain, but I don't know how safe the band would feel touring the middle east.

of course it isnt as popular but still we have a huge number of rock fans esp in the arabian gulf whod give anything to see a true death band

oh but it is!!! heard of Orphaned Land? recently making a big scene for the middle eastern metal contingency. i think it would be awesome for Opeth to play in the middle east.

they're from Israel, which as far as i know, is part of the middle east. and they're metal, particularly death metal, prog, like Opeth- so i don't see any reason why Opeth would have trouble finding fans in the area!

You had a Formula One race in Bahrain, perhaps Opeth isn't far behind.

However, Bahrain is still a monarchy ruled partially by Islamic Law. Would a death metal band even be allowed to play there ? The F1 victory celebration normally includes the spraying of champagne, but at Bahrain they spray sparkling fruit juice instead because of where they are. This sort of thing doesn't seem to bode well for a DM band to come there without problems.

Anyway, I know several people from the Middle East, and they're all really cool people. But of course, it's the 'bad apples' in the Middle East who will get all the attention. IMHO, it's really up to the people there to root out these bad apples, and so far they havn't done it. But I digress :) .

I agree with most of what u people said, yes my country is a monarchy ruled mainly by islamic law but islam never said anything about forbidding entertainment as long as it is moral and well behaved. See the problem is that the sterotyped image of arabs protrays us as anti-fun, anti-common sense, anti-democratic,, when in reality that is very far from the truth. True we do have our share of the hard-headed type who would instantly be suspicous of such an endeavour and consider it some act of satanism or something but if one would take a close look at modern arabic music one would realize that nowadays, videoclips of arabic songs are nothing but a competition of sleaziness and sexual immorality. Yet they let these so-called artists come and perform right here in our midst for the sake of those airheads who call such acts of nudity 'art'. Anyway what im trying to say is give us a chance, im sure we'll be worthy of it.

I've studied a bit of Islam and Arabic culture recently, and I have noticed that most negative things and prejudices people have are indeed just because of western propaganda etc. I sincerely hope that you will get a chance to see Opeth and/or other great western bands in the future!

Well Opeth was supposed to play in Jordan some time ago. I sincerly doubt Opeth doesn´t wanna play in the middle East but I believe it´s a safety issue not only for the band but the entire crew that travels along with them. If I remember correctly Opeth wanted to go to Jordan to play the gig but everyone else would not go meaning they couldn´t get anything set up, so they cancelled.

I´m sure under the right circumstances Opeth would be more than happy to play a couple of gigs in the middle east. And just to get some perspective on things, Opeth hasn´t been playing in any part of Aisia or Africa for that matter, as far as I know.

Here you go.

BTW I don't see realistic safety issues for a Swedish band in Bahrain. Ever seen one of those Arabic channels? They're almost like Raiuno :) People tend to forget that those islamic madman are a minority that live in certain regions or communes; they are not 'the man in the street' in the Middle East.

Opeth won't tour Iraq ofcourse. But the Middle East isn't just Iraq you know. Like Yugoslavia wasn't Europe a couple of years ago. Who was afraid of Miloseviç? Balkan criminals of war are still operating in our regions, be it in organised crime (human traffic, prostitution, burglaries, car theft, ... ). I'm not leaving my sleep for it.

I feel the need to object to about everyone talking of "islamic madmen". As far as I have understood, Islam stands against violence and tells muslims to respect other religions and so on, so I would say the madmen are anything but islamic. Just had to get that off my chest.
