Burzum - No matter what you think about the guy himself, or what you want to say about him, his actions or beliefs....I stand by my opinion that his music (from "Burzum" to "Filosofem", at least.) is of exceptional quality. To be fair most people who go around preaching "omg burzum is shit and varg is a twat" are just whiny Mayhem fans who got sand in their vaginas over the Euronymous murder, like they lost a hero or something. Pathetic. Mayhem were obviously an influential band who put out some good records but it happened, its done, it was well over 15 years ago. get over it. The man may be a murderer but if you let that change your judgment of his artistic output you're an ignorant, gullible fucking idiot and I don't want anything to do with you.

Gorgoroth - I don't think they're amazing now but I won't deny how awesome I think their first three albums are. Pentagram, Antichrist, and Under the Sign on Hell. Pure evil on disc. They've put out a couple of good albums since then but for me personally, nothing matches the brilliance of their first three. Essential listen for anyone with even a passing interest in the genre. Infernus ftw.

Ulver - "Bergtatt" is one of my top 5 black metal albums ever, and I enjoy pretty much all that I've heard from their varied discography, from "Nattens Madrigal" all the way to "Perdition City" and back. An impressive band with an impressive and varied output.

Runners up I considered: Borknagar, Arcturus, Satyricon
