Your Comments on each album...

orchid - a flower on the cover
morningrise - wow! these songs are long
mayh - good
still life - it's red
bwp - dirge for november sucks
deliverance - haven't heard
damnation - haven't heard

Orchid - True timeless classic. It had a very contemporary sound for its time, fitting in with the guitar doodlings of alot of Melodic Death bands at the time. The individual parts of the album are amazing, but in general the structure is just cut and paste.

Morningrise - Longer songs, more monotonous and boring than Orchid. Doesn't quite have that metal 'rawness' that Orchid did and has an even worse structure.

MAYH - Amazing album. Opeth's first move toward stringing their songs together cohesively. With a concept as the framework, they were able to that quite well, and produce some real classics (ie. April Ethereal, Demon of the Fall...)

Still Life - The apex of Opeth's career. The definitive melancholy pseudo-prog death metal masterpiece. The musicality in this album has not been matched since, and is reflected in that fact that I still find new things in the music that I hadn't during previous listens. Great concept as a backbone aswell.

Blackwater Park - The album where Opeth's song structures started getting a bit redundant again. A large part of this album felt very forced, and whilst a worthy follow up to Still Life, it doesn't match it by any means. Produced some great tracks such as 'The Leper Affinity', 'The Funeral Portrait' and of course the title track 'Blackwater Park'.

Deliverance - Think BWP but not as much experimentation, riffs looped longer, longer songs and just a more monotonous sound in general. There's not much more to say really. This is certainly their weakest effort out of their entire career, due quite probably to the time constraints and the focus being placed on Damnation.

Damnation - An interesting album that is quite refreshing after sampling through a catalogue of 6 metal albums. Nonetheless it does get quite boring at times and doesn't quite live up to the expectations I had of it to produce the kind of material bands like Camel did in the 70s. Damnation isn't as much Prog as it is an mellow ballad album and that in my opinion lets it down.

Orchid-Atmospheric, dark, very natural sounding.
Morningrise-Still dark, more desolate sounding. Amazing work.
MAYH-pretty good, more towards progressive than traditional opeth
Still Life-Breathtaking. Perhaps my favorite (or Morningrise)
Blackwater Park-Very well done, some pitfalls, the stray from traditional opeth is obvious.
Deliverance-At times very dull and uninteresting, but it has some great moments.
Damnation-Sounds like a rip off of 70's prog. Pretty much what you play if you want to get laid.

Orchid, Morningrise - made everyone pay attention
My Arms Your Hearse, Still Life - made everyone bitch about not being the first two records
Blackwater Park - made everyone bitch about selling out
Deliverance/Damnation - made everyone bitch about Steven Wilson

2 days ago I listened to opeth's entire catalogue in order- Starting with In the Mist she was standing & ending with Weakness. My comments are as followed......

\m/

Orchid - Solid debut, just not that great to modern Opeth standards
Morningrise - I like most of the songs here, though they're just too long and disjointed.
My Arms, Your Hearse - Getting better, some great songs here and more structured, though probably their shortest album, except for Damnation.
Still Life - A great, beautiful album, second only too...
Blackwater Park - An excellent, excellent album. The song structures now move seemlessly into each other, with some great heavy and terrific soothing parts.
Deliverance - Pretty much a standard Opeth album, not overly exciting, but still a good album nonetheless.
Damnation - I commend them for having balls on doing this. Many bands wouldn't even think of going 'lighter'. Sure some of the songs have a similar sound, but still it is a great album to listen to. I'd also say it's great romance music too. ;)

Orchid- stunning, awesome music and atmosphere.
Morningrise- see Orchid ;)
Mayh- Really nice development on their original sound, the clean vocals and lead guitar work in particular stand out. More coherant than the previous albums (though I like the first 2 more), probably the pinnical of the Opeth concept, classy album.
Still Life- Some good songs, overall I find it a little dull, the Opeth formula started to become a little predictable, doesn't quite have the x factor previous albums do.
Blackwater Park- Boring and predictable
Deliverance- Lacking in long term depth, though with a greater proportion of enjoyable riffs than BWP, a continuation of the dumbing down of the Opeth formula.
Damnation- Haven't heard it.

Because I don't have alot of money to spend on CDs, and I'd rather buy stuff that I know I'm going to enjoy and listen to alot, than take a chance on Damnation, given that I don't like the direction Opeth have gone in the last few years :) If I had a decent income and money to spare, I'd probably check it out, but that's not the case at the moment.

WTF are u talkign about .. it seems EVERY band starts out heavier and ends up lighter.. Look t Dark Tranquility, In Flames, Soil Worl.. countless others they start out heavy and now borderlining pop music.

It seems Every metal band does this. They get bored of heavy music and want to bring something new to the fans? It pisses me off I can only hope Opeth's enxt one isnt more geared towards damnation
