I was thinking of RYM list ideas and this one seemed interesting to tackle. I have a feeling a thread like this already exists but the search function doesn't work.

Anyways so subjectively speaking (or objectively if you wanna be that guy to try and argue it here) what's your favourite 10 year time span for metal releases? For example 1987 to 1996 (probably a good one if you're a death metal oldhead).

Feel free to namedrop important albums/EPs/demos etc to justify your span, whether it be 1 per year, or just every single favourite regardless of proportion (maybe some years within your span kinda suck etc).

Edited.

Good thread idea. It's hard to say for me. As far a historical significance goes, I give a lot of credit to the era spanning from the early 70s to early 80s. I'm including dates that are slightly out of bounds, some stuff from the late 60s to early 80s, but the progression there from what I'd consider early heavy metal to the first examples of extreme metal is pretty crazy.

Aa far as my preference goes, if I could only listen to stuff from one decade, I'd have to ignore the fact that Black Sabbath is my favorite band (it's not fair, I'd pick the 70s because I can't do without their early work), but I'd go with the early 80s to early 90s because I think that would give me the most expansive and diverse list of things I'd consider to be masterpieces.

It sucks because I love extreme metal, but I can't do without its progenitors, as well as the classic heavy metal that came out in that period.

you guys are cheating and giving 11 years here.

my heart says i have to include '84 so it needs to be '84-'93, but basically any ten year range from '83 to '98 or so is gonna be amazing.
With 10 years and 10 years only, I think sometime in the 80s-90s would be the safest choice, imo.

The fact that Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Motorhead, Deep Purple, and Rainbow did so much great stuff in the 70s makes it harder, but imo, the 70s were a "quality over quantity" decade for metal as far as I've witnessed retrospectively, as someone who wasn't around then.

1983 - 1992 since I can count. The range where I could come up with the most great albums is probably actually 2006 - 2015 due to the explosion of doom metal, drone/doom and the more genre-straddling sorts of extreme metal that are my cup of tea etc. But the top tier of my all-time faves leans more towards '83 - '92 so I'll stick with that.

Top thirteen of '83 - '92 with a couple of metal-adjacent ones thrown in:
1. Metallica - ...And Justice for All
2. Danzig - Danzig II: Lucifuge
3. Sticky Filth - Nektar der Götter
4. Megadeth - Countdown to Extinction
5. English Dogs - Where Legend Began
6. Danzig - Danzig III: How the Gods Kill
7. Candlemass - Ancient Dreams
8. Megadeth - Rust in Peace
9. Slayer - Seasons in the Abyss
10. Dayglo Abortions - Two Dogs Fucking Deux Chien Fourrent
11. Overkill - Horrorscope
12. Saint Vitus - V
13. Metallica - Ride the Lightning

Some greats from bands not quite making the list: Mercyful Fate - Melissa, Stratovarius - Fright Night, Suicidal Tendencies - How Will I Laugh Tomorrow & Tankard - The Morning After. Then if I expanded the list further there'd be selections from the NWOBHM thing, Cathedral, Entombed, Flotsam and Jetsam, Grave, Hermética, Morbid Angel, Nocturnus, Testament, The Accüsed, Vader, W.A.S.P., Winter and on it goes.
