They are literally only just worth the money. A penny more and I'd call it a rip off

I'm not going to complain, it has done SOMETHING, but hasn't exactly made a big enough change for me to tell everyone to run out and get one.

Is the sh-5 clear/tight enough to play metal in drop A? Also what guitar wood suits this pickup the best?

I'm playing metal in B-standard in a Schecter Blackjack Baritone (mahogany body/neck, no maple cap) and I'm absolutely loving the Custom, very punchy but also tight in the low-end (more so than the JB) and nicely compressed from the ceramic magnet (but not as harsh or excessively hot IMO as the Distortion) - so I would say "yes" to your first question, and "mahogany" to the second (unless it's neck-thru maple with mahogany wings, that might get a bit bright/brittle)
