I didn't think there was anything all that great or amazing this year. Nothing that will be considered a classic in five or 10 years. Lots of average and disappointing albums from bands like Conan, Hour of Penance, Aborted, and Goatwhore.

Couldn't make it 15 I'm sad to say but here's the 10 that made the year pretty damn sweet I'd say (in no particular order save for the first 2 which are still jockeying for the top spot and I don't think I'll ever be able to pick one over the other):

Eyehategod - Eyehategod
Godflesh - A World Lit Only By Fire
Crowbar - Symmetry in Black
Melvins - Hold It In
Triptykon - Melana Chasmata
Incantation - Dirges of Elysium
Mastodon - Once More Round the Sun
Pallbearer - Foundations of Burdon
Profetus - As All Seasons Die
Mournful Congregation - Concrescence of the Sophia

Clearly I didn't stray very far from my comfort zone.

Best:

Wild Throne – Bloodmaker
Triptykon - Melana Chasmata
Philm – Harmonic
Opeth – Pale Communion
Hail Spirit Noir – Oi Magoi
Spectral Lore – III
Lord Mantis - Death Mask
YOB - Clearing The Path to Ascend

OK:

Cynic – Kindly Bent to Free Us
Stork – Broken Pieces
Mastodon - Once More 'Round The Sun
Legacy ID - Genesis

Nah, in this case Der Morgenstern is just being a prefixed black metal wimp.

Every fucking time somebody doesn't have a hard-on for a metal band you like, you bring up "prefixed" black metal, apropos of nothing. I bet you even pull that card with your grandparents. "Oh, you don't like Reek, grandma? I guess you should go back to listening to your post-atmospheric folk blackgaze or whatever the hell it is you listen to"

The 2014 releases from these bands are my list I guess since they're all the ones I liked enough to buy, in no particular order:
Panopticon
Kampfar
Alestorm
Valknacht
Equilibrium
1349
Benighted
Goatwhore
Amputated

One guy says how a relatively little-known thrash band released his potential favorite of the year, and suddenly they're Manilla Road/The Chasm-tier? Der Morgenstern is somebody that would probably like thrash more if it incorporated more Jew's harp.

I don't have a hard-on for Reek btw, I've heard a few songs before and thought they were decent IIRC, but haven't checked out the full album yet.

I would say do yourself a favor as a tech thrash fan and listen to the entire album. These guys are some true musicians, and by the end of the album you should have gained some respect for them. It doesn't show in the first two songs, standard modern thrash stuff in the vein of Hatchet.

But song 3 is quality Megadeth worship, better than anything Megadeth did on Supercollider. Tracks 4, 5 and 8 are progressive instrumentals. Excellent guitar solos in track 5. Track 8 in particular has some sweet counterpoint going on between the lead guitar and the bass, sounds neoclassical. Track 8 is up there with Exmortus (without the vocals) imo. In song 9 they completely change their vocal style and the music to melodic death metal for 4 minutes, then the last 7 minutes are experimental/progressive.

We should do a voting thread for top metal albums of 2014. We could use all the albums posted here as submissions to vote on.

(I know mine won't win but it'd be interesting at least)

I'm not even sure the method is proper. It definitely isn't empirical, as in, the OSDM list probably couldn't be replicated without conscious effort. But ya, whatever. Lists are fun.

NP - BS Sabotage...what an incredibly boring album.

1) Anathema - Distant Satellites

the rest, not in any true order:
California Breed
Blackfinger
The Skull - For Those Which Are Asleep
Ian Anderson - Homo Eraticus
Devin Townsend - Z2
Blues Pills
Accept - Blind Rage
Rival Sons - Valkyrie
Foo Fighters - Sonic Highway
Triptykon - Melana
Uriah Heep - Outsider
Vader - Tibi et Igni
KXM
Red Zone Rider
Rated X
