Your Top 2008 releases so far...

i was really disappointed with bursts new album. It just lacked the direction and general focus the last one did. It seemed incredibly drawn out and there was a huge lack of texture unlike origo, gutted..

I agree, the album was ok but i was expecting soo much more.

The new Cynic album is a beautiful thing! some very sweet melodys on there, although it does seem like the growls have been almost tacked on to retain their "metalness"

It's the only CD i have from Burst, but i'll put Origo on my wishlist, the next time i go to Metalzone

Opeth - Watershed
Swallow the Sun - Plague of Butterflies
Bloodbath - The Fathomless Mastery
Into Eternity - The Incurable Tragedy
Keep of Kalessin - Kolossus
Neuraxis - The Thin Line Between

Vertebrae-Enslaved is imo, brilliant. Their songwriting is second to none. It's giving The Maniacal Vale-Esoteric a run for it's money. When all is said and done, it will be one of these 2 for me. Also, many people I've talked with say Alloy-Skepticism is an absolute masterpiece. I've yet to hear it. Soon though.

Hahaha, I sat next to Hetfield at a restaurant. He was all alone, didn't talk to anyone, ate and left. Bass came trick-or-treating with his wife and kids at my house, he said they working on a new album... before it was ever announced I think.

Man! 2008 was a huge year of disappointments for me. Most everything I was looking forward to has been a massive letdown. But did manage to find 2 that did not disappoint.

1. Daylight Dies - lost to the living (instantly one of my all time favorites. Just brilliant!)

2. Neuraxis - the thin line between (Most super technical DM bands are just impressive but this album is actually catchy & listenable as well as impressive.)

Biggest letdowns:

1. Opeth - watershed (Quality music here but they have officially strayed too far from the band I fell in love with)

2. Draconian - turning season within (I much prefer the depressing tones of "arcane rain fell" and those are absent for the most part on this album, However their new single "no greater sorrow" is much more to my liking)

3. Swallow The Sun - plague of butterflies (I've listened to this 5 or 6 times and it has yet to endear itself to my ears. Kind of boring really, but still better than 99% of other albums in the doom genre, just not near as good as their previous efforts)

4. Doom:vs - dead words speak (No longer melodic or emotive)

5. Omnium Gatherum - redshift (They peaked on "years in waste" and have been on a creative decline ever since. the redshift is just plain aweful)

I'm the opposite with Draconian. I always thought they were a good band, but it wasn't until Turning Season Within did I feel they finally came into their own identity. For me, it's their best work to date.

The Daylight Dies, I think I only heard it once, and not even all the way through, so I can't judge that one.

Opeth... just difficult for me to enjoy. I've never been a big fan of the proggy keyboard sound, and this CD seems bloated with it for my taste. I think my favorite Opeth CD has got to be Deliverance.

Swallow The Sun, I didn't even know they had something new out already. If you like StS, check out Alexi's side project Ghost Brigade. For me, miles ahead.

I do think the new Draconian is their best production to date and they have improved overall as a band, and I do like it, but I prefer their formerly sorrowful sound.

Give that daylight daylight dies a few more spins (you will have to love it especially tracks 3 and 7)

For me Opeth's Grand Opus was Still Life.

Oh and thanks for the head's up on the Ghost Brigade, I will certainly check it out.

4. Doom:vs - dead words speak (No longer melodic or emotive)
I wish I didn't have to agree with you on this, but I feel the same way. I still like the album, but everything that I enjoyed so much about Aeternum Vale seems to have dissappeared, and the emotion seems somehow superficial, at least in comparison to the debut. Still an enjoyable album though, I think, I just like it for different reasons than the first album. The first album is fantastic though, so it's not too suprising that Dead Words Speak doesn't match up to it, and perhaps the change of style wasn't without reason and he wanted to take the sound somewhere completely different.

I'll still never understand the infatuation with Still Life, oh well.
I think Watershed has some very cool moments, and those moments were more impressive to me in the live setting than when I heard them on the disc, as well. But it's not one of my favorite Opeth discs, we'll see how it fares in time.

Someday I will have to check out the new Opeth.

It's weird. I never thought there would be a year where I wouldn't purchase a new Opeth the month it was released.

Same goes for Iced Earth. They are a top 10 of all time band for me, and I haven't even purchased their new one either.

I guess as each year passes and new bands are discovered, other classics who release similar material over and over go to the bottom of the must have list.

Daylight Dies - now this is a band that intrigues me greatly.
I thought they were amazing when I saw them open for Katatonia and Moonspell.
I thought they were weak opening for Candlemass.
Though it could be that ANYONE opening for Candlemass wouldn't have gone over well for me.
This is a band I should check out on disc to give proper attention.
Any recommendations? Would the new one be the best place to start?

in no particular order....

Airged L'Amh - Ode to Salvation - incredible epic / true metal. This was an impulsive buy and worth every cent. I am more upset that I never heard of these guys before a few weeks ago.

Saurom - Once Romances - the spanish folk metal version of Blind Guardian.
The only issue is that there stuff is damn hard to find....try ebay if interested.

SatanaKozel - Rogatiya - upbeat catchy folk metal, much like Finntroll, but like most non-folk metal fans say...it all sounds like Finntroll. Sure but these guys know how to keep it upbeat and quick and not make each song blend into each other.

Kaledon - Legend of the Forgotten Reign: Chapter 5: A New Era Begins - damn what a long title. They ditched the old singer who I actually like alot but 95% of the critics and power metal fans hated, he had super high vocals that sounded like he just inhaled helium. The new singer has a much more wide vocal range. On first listen I thought this disc was dull. After a few spins it has gorwn on me better than gang green. Really great stuff.

Tyr - Land - this disc is way better than the last one. One of the better viking acts out there. Amazing vocals and this one is much more upbeat and catchier than the last one.

Stormwarrior - Heading North - amazing true metal in the vien of "Walls of Jericho" era Helloween. I thought the other disc are good but really over rated but this one they have hit it on the head. Quick, fast, and catchy.

Symphonity - Voice From the Silence - ex- Dionysus singers new band. pretty much the same if you were a fan of that band. Great simple catchy power metal. Very happy and upbeat.

Munruthel - Enoxa Royoyer - new disc by one of the guys from Nockturnal Mortem. It was recommended to me and I was kind of up in the air about it because nothing is worse than badly done black metal. Holy smokes....this thing was all over the place from power metal to black metal to folk metal. Very much like Vintersorg / Moonsorrow. Very epic stuff.

Firewind - The Premonition - this got lots of bad reviews because it wasnt anything really new style wise. But this disc is filled with great stuff, just like myself.

Magician - Tales of the magician - great Brazilian band. Not your typical power metal act from that area. Very high powered power metal with heavier vocals. Lived up to the hype that I was reading about this disc.

other great disc this year were Power Quest new one, Frequency, Alestorm, Izomorum, and Crystallion.
