Your Top 2008 releases so far...

Here's a couple that I can think of right now...

Metallica - Death Magnetic, I'm sorry for anyone who doesn't like this album, it's the fucking shit.

Into Eternity - The Incurable Tragedy

Spheric Universe Experience - Anima (come out in 2007 but I didn't get it until this year.)

Tomorrow's Eve - Mirror of Creation 2 (come out in 2006 but I didn't get it until this year, I know I'm always a year or two late.)

Zero Hour - Dark Deceiver

Pyramaze - Immortal

Meshuggah - obZen

Mercenary - Architect of Lies

Thanks for taking the time to explain what you meant. I do see your point now, and I would agree with some of it as well. You mention carcass, I actually was NOT a fan until Heartwork. I enjoy their "new" style.

Im a gore/grind fan (have a gore/grind band actually, besides my Doom band) so I really enjoy their first albums, but yes heartwork is definitely their best, and I love Swansong also, everyone puts that album down. Im seeing these guys November 2nd, i cant wait!!

Paul and SlipkyesBass -
I am 50 / 50 on both your viewpoints.

To Paul's point, it has been proven that a lot of bands get lazy as they get more popular. In all honesty, I personally feel this is due to so many bands spending almost TOO much time on the road and not enough time writing material.

Let's take Opeth for example. I would venture to say its a safe bet that they took a lot longer time to write and record Blackwater Park than they have with their most recent output (That's not to rip on their newer material, but to speak to the fact that they tour a lot more now)

To SlipkyesBass's point though, as a superfan or fanboy (or whatever you call it), I can see how you would be able to relate to any material a band you like puts out. Speaking for myself, there are many bands where I am such a fanboy of that I could enjoy to some degree even the weakest albums from many long running bands (Such as Helloween, Motorhead, Iron Maiden, and Trouble).

I think any long running band who tours a lot is going to run into situations where they have to meet a deadline and rush out an album that might contain a few hits and a lot of misses (IE - filler).

So, not that you asked me to judge your debate, but I would call this one a wash, as I think you are both right and both make valid points that Jasonic agrees with.

you know Im right but you had to call it a tie cause paul wont let you do his laundry anymore eh? kidding, appreciate your comment, Im a Huge Helloween fan also, Chameleon is a superb album, everyone hates it lol.

I picked up "Communion"-Septicflesh, and I must say, this is an excellent brick(although short 38 minutes) of blackened/death with a touch of Goth. No filler on this, songs are bangin' and quick. Full orchestra and choir which is done extremely well, no cheese and not bombastic. Septicflesh absolutely know what their doing. Great addition to my collection.

I like that the album is shorter, actually. One big problem I have lately with cds is that they're too fucking long. Having 60+ minutes of music is fine, as long as it's all killer no filler. Unfortunately it seems like more and more that's not the case. I wish a band like, for example, In Flames would learn to sit down and really take the best riffs and ideas and put them together into making 9 great songs, instead of 14 so-so songs.

Agreed. I too do not like "long" albums. 45-55 minutes is sufficient. What I should have clarified, Larry, was that after listening to the disc, I felt I wanted more, you know what I mean? But, if an album is 38 minutes that doesn't mean it's not as good as one that's 70. For the musical ideas and composition can be done in a shorter album length, provided they are well- written and conceived properly. In Flames, would do well to listen to you. It seems that a lot of "fat" could be removed from some of their work. By the way, I picked up the Septicflesh because you mentioned it as in your top for 2008. next I should get that Hail of Bullets?

Yeah Jason, the IF guys are indeed quite taken with American nu-metal, I know that for a fact. Or at least, they were for a time, not sure if that still holds true. I don't begrudge anyone their personal tastes but I just wish they'd have not strayed so far towards that side of things. But, whatever makes them happy I guess. We can wish all day that they'd still play music along the lines of Colony but if that doesn't make the band happy then there's no point I guess. Nowadays there's umpteen bands out there who do a better In Flames than In Flames does anyhow

And yeah I totally understand what you're meaning about the Septic Flesh, BloodSword. I too have had cds where I was left wanting more when it was done. But I think that's kind of a good thing really, just makes me look forward to the next one that much more :)

If you dig old school heavy European death metal then check out the Hail Of Bullets. It's got members of Gorefest, Asphyx, and Pestilence in it, so that kinda gives you an idea of what to expect.

Got the "Of Frost and War" --Hail of Bullets. And I don't know how this one got past me, fuckin' incendiary, relentless and rib-splitting. The guitars and drum work are some of the best I've heard in Euro/death/metal. The vocalist sounds like a "punk" singer to me, a few death vocals though. Took awhile to get used to the vocals, but realize now how well they fit the music. I agree, this has not been a great year for Metal, however this and 2 or 3 others are excellent.

Martin Van Drunen's vocals were always one of my favorites in the metal underground, back when he was in Pestilence and Asphyx. They're so unique and throaty and pissed off sounding, noone sounds like him really.

I mentioned before that not alot of metal seems to "move me" much anymore (referring particularly to newer bands/releases these days). But I can tell you that I can still put on "Consuming Impulse" by Pestilence and get that same feeling as I did when I first heard it nearly 18 years ago

Hearing Hail Of Bullets nearly gave me that same feeling, and it's a welcome one!

Educate me on Pestilence.
When these guys came out, I had already made my multi-year transition from thrash and metal to punk and hardcore.
I missed out a lot on the late 80s / early 90s death metal stuff.

I have heard some Pestilence on various internet radio programs and it always sounded great.

What is their best to start with?
Any albums to avoid?

Consuming Impulse is where to start, that's pretty much THE classic Pestilence record. Primitive by today's standards perhaps but at the time it was pretty extreme death-thrash (or whatever the hell you call it).

Testimony Of The Ancients would be best to pick up second, IMO. A very good record (some prefer it over Consuming...) where they moved a bit more towards technical-DM, and Patrick M. took over the vocal duties.

The first record Malleus Maleficarum (sp?) is cool but more primitive, the playing and production are more of an acquired taste and better to investigate once you're more familiar with the other stuff.

Spheres is a cool album, very proggy DM. If you like Cynic and Elements-era Atheist then this cd will be right up your alley. Lots of guitar synth all over it. Some good songs and good ideas but it does become a bit of a laborious listen after a while.
