Everyone thinks it's kvlt to like the early Opeth and not the superior later works

Or maybe the early stuff is actually more subtle and less abrasive than everything they've done after that (besides Damnation). That would be why I listen to it more.

Songwriting-wise, I'd say they're on par with the rest of the discog - just slightly less complex.
