Your very *favourite* metal production?

Stuck Mojo - Declaration of a Headhunter

stunning production. great album. not to mention, Rich Ward's tone is incredible!

Favorite of all time.

American me www.myspace.com/americanme503
reason: It is possibly the heaviest fucking mix in the world and oh my god it is LOUD but so crisp the bass guitar literally rips you in half. it says on their myspace who their producer is, and he does like post hardcore crap. the vocal production sucks though cause that singer isn't that great

Emmure - Good Bye to the gallows

reason: Zues mixed that damn thing perfectly the vocals, the drums, the bass guitar, its so crushing. dear god man. CRUSHING

Arch Enemy - Anthems of rebellion

reason: its proably the most perfect balanced mix i've heard ever. nothing is to over bearing and it sounds so warm

Inflames - a sense of purpose
this is the most natural warm sound i've heard from a metal band. the warms reminds me of those huge studios back in 70s that the moody blues recorded in

Scar symmetry - Pitch black progress

reason: huge.

I think, Death Magnetic is the best produced metal album....wahahah:D joke.

Nevermore´s "godless endeavor" is perfect work..just like "doomsday machine" from arch enemy. The best produced metal albums, in my opinion. Okay..the Black Album sounds still great..not to compare with the new output.

This Godless Endeavor is a really weird one for me, since I started listening to it in search for some new metal that I didn't normally listen to. So in the beginning I didn't like the music or the production. Now, months later, Nevermore are one of my favorites and TGE is one of my favorite productions. The guitar tone there has basicly over time become my ideal tone that I strive for. It's like cold and warm at the same time. I don't particulary love the drums sounds though, especially the cymbals/OHs. They just sound a bit weird to me, and the hihats for example doesn't the kind of attack that I would prefer.

All in all it's great though.

But the kick on TGE, :OMG: Such a perfect balance of attack and punch, perfectly illustrated in those little 16th-note runs in the "Cling to wasted beliefs and visions..." part

Cinderella - Night Songs.
It's amazing what you could do with a recording before the f-ing loudnesswars started.

1. Nevermore - This Godless Endeavor. KICK, SNARE, TOMS AND OHs ALL PERFECT. The blast beats on Born are perhaps the coolest I'll ever hear even if they aren't that fast.

2. Evergrey - In Search of Truth. 5150 used I think and Henrik used a Reb Beach Ibanez axe, absolutely KICKS ASS! Drums are Tama, the kick and toms (and OCTOBANS!!!) sound incredible. Cymbals could have been miked better, but they still sound good. Pat Carlsson's epic tom fills enter the Portnoy and Peart zone, and Andy LaRocque's production brings them to the forefront, as it should be.

3. Evergrey - Solitude, Dominance and Tragedy. Andy LaRocque's production here is not as edgy as Evergrey's next outing In Search of Truth, but it has to be the best tape-recorded album I've heard so far. Drums sound smooth and warm especially and so does the bass, bringing back fond memories of the atmosphere of King Diamond's Abigail.

4. Kamelot - The Black Halo. I know there ain't many power metal fans on this forum, but take note of this name: Sascha Paeth. He did a very very good job on previous Kamelot albums producing, playing keyboards, as well as adding sound clips and samples, but this is the pinnacle of his recording efforts. Best Kamelot drum sound thus far, that kick really booms on my 5.1 speakers.

5. Angra - Temple of Shadows. A stunner by Dennis Ward...Guitars sound is perfect especially on Kiko Louriero's tapping parts, Felipe's fingerstle bass sound is fat with enough high end to cut through (and lovely legato fretless on slower songs), and last but certainly not least, Aquiles Priester's mega Mapex walnut kit sounds EPIC, especially the snare and toms.

6. Pagan's Mind - Enigmatic:Calling. Absolutely perfect drum recording, of a very very nice Tama Arstar II Kit. Beefy kick, loud and clear toms, great cymbals, what more could I ask for? Guitar tone is AMAZING, has fuzz but sounds like a dream in soloing and tapping. Fingerstyle bass is nice and loud too.

yeah..it´s good to hear, that some of you also have the opinion, that Nevermore´s TGE is a great production. I cannot find one thing, that is not perfect on this godless endeavor..same with "into eternity´s" last album or "doomsday Machine".

But I also like the sound of System of a down a lot..especially "mezmerize". No Idea what Rubin have done with the new metallica output. I cannot believe it..still not!

Yes the kick is true liquid awesome. The rolls at the middle section with the backing vox right after that part are also really sweet.

This Godless Endeavor is a great sounding album on its own merits, but when compared to some other releases, can be left sounding a tad small and kind of hollow or lo-fi. There is something very bizarre about the guitars above all, that sounds like too much EQ was used after capture. Don't get me wrong, I do love the tone in its own way, but there's just this *something* about the production that stops it getting up there with albums like Doomsday, Holographic Universe, Sweet Vengeance, even that Trivium one Andy did.

Personally, I don't find the tone on Holographic Universe to be anything special at all - it's passable, but can sound thin in comparison to other good ones.
