Adam D micing tips

Oh my fucking god Rob, I can't believe those are my DI's; maybe it's just cuz I've never heard them used in a full mix with a monster bass and beastly drums, but I've never heard 'em sound so good, and quite close to the original IMO! (though a bit "grainier", the SLO is smoother and more "liquidy" IMO, but fuck, it better be for that price! :loco: )

EDIT: Listening again after just listening to the original, though, the similiraty is astounding! :headbang: Would you be kind enough to share what snare sample you used? (either literally by sharing or just informing us of which paid-for sample it is :D) And the kick is fantastic too!

Where can I find your impulses? The link in the impulses thread is dead.

Here's the one I have left, but I wouldn't expect much unless you're running a Rectifier preamp in modern mode through it (otherwise it's super fizzy) - check near the bottom of the 1st page inthis thread for my explanation why!

And I used my Ibanez Prestige RGA321F with an EMG 81 (@ 18v) in the bridge and brand new strings, btw!

just watched one of the underoath tracking/studio vids with adam d tracking - mic looks pretty close to the grille. guess he doesnt do the 6" thing all the time.....

damn do I want a jcm800

Can you post the link to the videos? Already checked youtube but did not find anything. Thanks!

I tried out the 6" method a day or two ago. It does sound pretty good, but it's definitely missing a lot of the in your face tone I've come to aim for.

I'd like to at some point try the 6" mixed with another 57 right on the cloth, will require phase adjustment I'm sure, but curious if the two can be blended to a good effect.

If the cab sounds distant at 6" it could be an indication of too many reflections flying around the live space. In rooms that are fairly deadened a distance of 6" should sound like its almost directly on the speaker.

Agreed, and I totally need to treat my new live room further. You saw the picture of the Mesa 4x12 in my new place. Completely dwarfed by the empty space around it. :D

Kay. Just finished recording the comparison and will upload when I get home... Mp3s or wavs?

Okay. well this took bloody ages, so if you have any clever suggestions for how i should have done it, keep them to yourself......

RIGHT!

SO!!!
AmpS used were Jcm 800 2205 and the ol' 5150 (green channel) into an orange cab with v30s

so what we have are comparisons of the 5150 and 800 on their own from right up in the grille, where i'd normally place it (bout 1 and a bit inches) then 2,3,4,5,6 inches and finally a foot. When listening to these be aware that they do get quieter the further away they get, so bare that in mind.

Then i did a blend of both amps, from closest to furthest in one file, roughly level matched, with and without drums. the blend was exactly 50/50 between the two and there was no eq used, could maybe have been a better blend, but by the end of it i couldnt tell any more!!

so without further ado

800

hope theres something useful there! pretty cool i think.
waddya think?

I very much liked the clips from 3-4" away. I can see how 6" would be usable in the right room, or for less in-your-face music. Vast improvement is heard even backing the mic away an inch or two.

Thanks for taking the time to post these sample clips! I'm one of those who has always been stuck in the assumption that you stick the mic right up to the grill, always. Eye opening.

Hey, thanks for those clips.

It's funny as you back away you can hear progressively more comb filtering thinning out the sound. I'm not sure what would sound best in the mix, but backing away takes away a lot of those shit boxy mids for sure.

The 800 sounds really muffled, but I really liked the way the 6" turned out on the 5150.
