There were a few key bands in each of those that were unique at the start, but gave rise to a great number of knockoffs that were not unique at all that came off from their rising popularity.
Take for example: Pantera. They had their own uniqueness and gained massive popularity in the US, but how many Pantera knockoff bands did that insipire? Same goes for Metallica, Slayer, Death, Possessed, and the like. A few bands come up with something new, and then 100 bands copy them precisely. This is a trend that is not unique to the US... it happens everywhere, but it seems overly apparent there. The few unique ideas are copied by hundreds and that new, fresh idea then gets over-redundant and boring.
The point I was making, is RIGHT NOW there is little innovation going on... Think of your own signature: Those bands could be trying to do something new and different... something imaginative... but instead they're making more thrash.
anyway, enough. QED.
EDIT
Actually, I think this is one of the most idiotic things I've ever posted
