Amps:
Peavey Windsor (with Mercury Magnetics transformers and choke)

Rocktron Vendetta (with Mercury Magnetics transformers and choke)

Cabs:
Avatar Contemporary 4x12 with Hellatone 60's (broken in Celestion V30's *this was the mic'd speaker) and Hellatone 30's (broken in Celestion 30th Anniversary Speaker)

Mesa/Boogie Standard 4x12 with Celestion V30's.

The same settings in the mixer were used in both clips as well as ONLY HP/LP on guitars.

Amps were boosted with a Keeley Modded Boss SD-1.

Identical mic settings (crease between dustcap and cone-- 60% on dustcap), identical speaker position (top right corner) and identical tone-stack/volume settings were used on each clip.

There is one clip for each combo of amp and cab. There is a poll choice above. You can vote/post your guesses. After 30 guesses, I'll give out the answers. Please tell me which combo you like best and you can really hear in a mix context how much of a difference the cab makes.

I liked both 3 & 4, but 3 is the winner for me because it had a tad more mids than 4, which made the sound bigger and heavier to me, great shootout!

i liked 3 the best. it was a close call between 3 and 4, though. 4 sounds very tight and defined, but i liked how big and full 3 sounds.

1 has a whole lot of mud/wool IMO, 2 has a character I'm not too fond of but is a bit clearer - I don't know the amps well enough to guess which is which but I am gonna guess both are the Avatar cab. I'm torn between 3 and 4; it's hard for me to really choose cuz I don't honestly like any of the tones that much (I know you were shooting for the style as we went over in the other thread, but I still can't say it's a sound I'm a fan of, they're all just so middy and indistinct to my ears), but in the end, I'm gonna say 3, because while 4 is slightly clearer, it too has a character to the distortion I'm not a fan of. Thanks for the comparison, will be interested to see the results!

Oh, and I voted Clip 3 Windsor/Mesa, but I'm not too confident in the Windsor assessment (but it seemed more likely)

Hmm, then I guess there were other factors involved that contributed to the tones ending up how they were (probably amp settings) - regarldess, my preference still stands! :)
