...but this one's more interesting.

Which passage is your favorite from all of DT's lyrics? Why?

Not to seem unfair, i'll start. Mine is "A heart that beats the wrong way (...) And the violence of dark" (not including the verses between those two) from Insanity's crescendo. The reason is that it's the most beautiful way i know to say the way i feel about myself.

There. Your turn. :)

objectively, shadow duet has the most intellectual lyrics out there. but the line i always felt was the most touching is felt a tremor in the pillars of the senses, same source as undo's pick.

Haven

now as the lights go down
deeper now it seems than long before
there are no noises here
just a silence gone bad
something i will never hide

this urging need to
invite the darkside in
invite the darkside
invite the darkside in
invite the darkside
in, in, in
into my haven

if there were words for this
would i sing, or should i scream?
i'd give my blood to stay
my blood just to stay right here

something i can never share

this urging need to
invite the darkside in
invite the darkside
invite the darkside in
invite the darkside
in, in, in
into my haven

plus the final part of Emptier Still:

i see you standing there
your face against the wall
turn right around
turn right around

i who know your deepest fear
and yet you walk away
turn right around
turn right around

so tell me are you lonely?
so tell me are you mine?
don't speak, for you are me

silence fell and eyes now widened
filling up the strength collapsing
capable of the ending froze in the tracks
brought to a bitter halt

clean vocals from the interlude of "To A Bitter Halt" off of Projector.

the reason it's one of my favorites is because every time i listen to this song and it starts playing i have to sing with it because the feeling and arrangements of the words and the feeling of the way it's sang is very powerful but very peacefull and sad among the rest of the song which is much heavier. the contrast also makes it powerfull.

A few of my favorite passages:

Like the leaves of the high trees
I wither and fall,
Borne by autumnal winds
to my funeral hall

I'm all alone in the grip of the silent sadness

I have been told to honour life
and what therein I'll find
but if all I see is darkness,
let me die and wake up blind
As the gleaming blade before me,
singing lullabies of loss
Whispering "Death is your redeemer
to the Paradise you've lost"

-Alone

Make each tear in my bare hands
A lifetime in hell

&

If I had wings, would I be forgiving?
If I had horns
Would there be flames to shy my smile?

-Punish my heaven

On account of their brightness
I made friends with the word and the moon
went with the tide and left for the sound
of dead instruments thrown out of tune

-Tongues

i cannot random-pick one now and i can't be arsed to think which one i would take because it would take an hour or so. also i couldn't really tell why i would pick that one.

There are too many, really. But if you consider it as "one of" my favourites, then I can say...

"Nihilist, hedon
The priceless art of their lives
Sorrow is a wing, laid atop of your heads
Skin deep
We carve our immeasurable sorrow
In the fold of your shivering arms..."

+

"We look at you afraid to see what we really are."

And the reason is most probably (yes, I'm not sure), great description of the tragical statement of human-beings and smashing expressions of Mikael.

I'll go ahead and be simple and mundane... the lyrics that hit closer are from Single Part of Two

I never wanted you to lie
never needed fragments of your day
A broken promise made,
to always come around
never to stay

...

We'd rather leave no trace and not look back
Than face the anxiety here and now

"If I had wings, would I be forgiving?
If I had horns
Would there be flames
to shy
my
smile?"

of course :)

nice thread!

i used to find that line from skyward:

"Our needs are depending in images in life
and the more you agree in the far more they ask
"

a bit related to my own life.

now i wonder:
am i simple and mundane too, for liking that quote :

"We'd rather leave and head for the skies
Than say all the right words too soon
"

from single part of two ? ;)

"No power left to retrieve my stolen language
filtered through the illiterate fingers of death

Flies
let sickness be poured
from the cupped hands of bedlam
To gather the fruits, fruits from my words

On account of their brightness
I made friends with the word and the moon
went with the tide and left for the sound
of dead instruments thrown out of tune

The red squared patterns, dragonrise and
evenclaw
decoying from pandemonic symmetry

Let ring
a dissonant note in the music of the spheres
the streak of promise in the nuclear sky
These whipping black tongues
aching to lick me back to life redefined
to inject their truths within me now"

Why is this part my favorite? The imagery is absolutley dazzling. Simply put, I love that song ;)

Oh,too many to mention...I'll just write some that are in my mind and ears 24/7 in this moment:
-Cowardice, this chain of events
gather and plot the ensnaring of me
gone now, the sense of lust
is there a cost for the reckless excess?
take in the growth and trust
retaliatory strike at the weakest spot
raked away remains of my fall
that laid scattered across plains of regret
humble in defence of the wicked
rundown, naked and blind...
I, can't take it anymore 'cause I am rundown
can't take it anymore 'cause this is wrong
tired and rundown
tired and rundown

-Sands of ages and the stars above
everchanging as the same hearts beat
repeating 'til the end
seas of slander and the soil we walk
everchanging as these old hearts beat
it ends up all the same

-Cannot fail in this the era of losers
burnt the shell of those that once held the torches
Cannot give you the senses anew
nor will you know innocence again

Something has got to give
These things I just don't want you to know

-We no longer support ourselves
we live through each other's tears
we no longer caress, no longer take hold
'til it will be over again
the dream is over when all this begins
the past not part of the deal
the failing words i once said to you
you turned and walked out the door

Gone, over, i said it's fine
you burn them bridges
and you turn around, around

-In Sight

-From word to a word I was led to a word
that spanned over cultures in rage
Crimson masses, sleeped in decadence
holding our tongues to the thirsty sun
So, is the future still open?
Luxury tell me, tell me
Then enter, hornet, from our hive-dark hearts
to draw down the end from within

-Alone

-Undo Control

- The strangers may they come in ignorance's disguise
so in the dark walking, to leave the last of times
knee-deep in desperation, to fill the gap behind

...Enough for now :)

[Lyrics to Undo control]
Great choices. :)

The thing about DT is that they have so many songs with amazing lyrics that it's sometimes hard to pick just one or a few.

nice thread!
Thanks! :)

Here's another one that deeply touches me :

secrets in here
claim no belonging
together again
or send me to madness
i know that i should have listened
was given a choice i turned down forever

so tell me are you lonely

emptier still
as time takes us farther
away from the goals
by which we are measured
i know that I should have stayed true
to you and to me
but time never heals
so here alone I stand

so tell me are you lonely
tell me are you mine

i see you standing there
your face against the wall
so turn right around
i who know your deepest fear
and yet you walk away
so turn right around so tell me are you lonely
tell me are you mine
don't speak for you are me

Definitely.

oh shit, another song :

Of richest emerald forged,
my soul still rises, longingly
From inferno's winding caverns,
through dark air soaring, restlessly
If silence was enough!
No words can grasp my starkest thoughts
No language known to man
portrays my naked sentiment

A world of silent stone,
as frozen in the nightly sky
In heaven's dark recesses laid,
no living soul draws nigh
For seconds all is still,
no moonlight heaves throughout the dark
Nor do the heavens breathe,
no dryads wreathe within the dark

Within my dark domain...
