Another out of boredom thread

most of the criticism there seems pretty level-headed, i can understand how people might think it was "monotonous" or "all over the place"....as if those two critiques could really stand side-by-side :err: ...but opeth certainly isn't for everyone, least of all those with short attention spans or a dislike of death vox

yeah oh n0es!! how culd they not liek my band?!

All joking aside, who cares. Different bands/music "click" for different people.

Although you have to admit some of those guys went a little too far there. e.g., "opeth is primitive and talentless music because they're only a gateway band to prog and death metal"
Yeah, with that logic Miles Davis, Mozart and Beethoven had no talent because they're the gateway artists to their respective genres.

^A lot of that type of criticism is brought on by the fact that Opeth change styles throughout single songs, often with little to no warning, thus people who are used listening to music which stays consistent throughout the individual songs (ie most metal bands) find the unexpected changes to be pointless.

I can't understand why everyone goes and reads Opeth reviews, or any reviews for that matter on bands they've already heard and enjoy. Who fucking cares what other people say about it..you will (or should at least) like what you enjoy regardless.

And then to make matters worse, there have been multiple threads created that just post links to people's reviews or copy/paste their reviews for others on here to read...none of which I have read, cause I and probably a good percentage of posters on here don't give a shit. Though it seems some of you do read those, and comment on them. I for one don't give a flying fuck about the reviews. Thanks.

"I throw in Opeth sometimes when I'm doing web work. It's relaxing to listen to, but nothing to squirt about."

Clearly Opeth is now being heard on a broader scale than I previously thought. I dont mind, its just odd when people think they know who Opeth are because they heard or have Damnation. Oh well.

I keep the hell away from reviews, unless of course I'm writing them. More often than not you'll find yourself getting angry to a point where it's unbearable, with all this compounded by the fact that you can't physically meet the people and beat the shit out of them, which then just leads you back to your weights so you can take it out on yourself... *sigh*. Back to it then.

What I object to is people who get their panties in a knot when people criticize Opeth. "OMG WTF yuo dont liek Opeth? Yuo cant appreciate treu art!!1 Yuo aer closeminded!11!"

Its not the matter of giving a fuck or not.

People read reviews to see what points others make on the music they are listening to. Reading different sorts of reviews can help people listen to their music with more awareness and understanding. An intelligent review can point out some interesting things and explain different things which might have not occured to the listener's mind.

Reviews also funstion as an opportunity to critisize or praise a certain artist (Just like a movie or a game review)
So generally speaking, by analysing different well-written (and even immature) reviews, we can acquire priceless information about the music we are listening to.
Of course a mature listener will not change his or her mind easily with accord to a single or a number of reviews.

I see what you mean.

These types of reviews that you speak up are divided into 2 types:

1- It is such an ignorant review that you need to forget about it and not waste anymore bandwith to argue with the guy.

2- The guy seems mature enough to have a debate with him about the matter.

But getting angry and wanting to beat his ass is unacceptable and useless.
Afterall, It is HIS opinion and nobody should be punished for expressing his opinion.

I'm totally fine with reviews which are even-handed and relatively objective, even illustrative in the points they make. I'm fine with people that can tell you WHY they like something, not out of prejudice or whatnot, but after having seriously listened to something and given it a chance.

You find however that the reality with most of these reviews is that the people haven't done this. They just spurt out a string of incoherent pretentious jargon which half the time is in contradiction to itself just so they can speak badly of the piece being reviewed.

This is what shits me, because it's a big indicator towards the majority of society who only accept things at face value. It's a reflection of this degenerative media-culture we have been bred into which makes me sick and I would quite happily kill every one of those people with my bare hands.

Judging by their spelling it looks like all they are all Blabbermouth posters anyway.
(ie. Not worth listening to or acknowledging).

I agree, it seems to me people expect Opeth to be something theya re not, a straight ahead death metal band, which is missing the point.
