A post I just made gave this idea. Pretty easy question.

You know Martin can do 'em wicked, cause, ya know... he's God and all... but do you think Opeth has been saving the blasting so they can do a song that sounds like Vader someday and rape us all into submission with one more thing they can do better than anyone else?

uhm...don't laugh, but I don't know what blastbeats are.
A type of fast drum beat characteristic of extreme heavy metal styles such as black metal, death metal and grindcore. Blastbeat is comprised at minimum of the bass drum and the snare drum, altough normally these two are accompanied by a cymbal such as hi-hat, ride, splash or crash.

Blastbeat originated in the '80s by hardcore and proto-grindcore bands which were seeking ways to bring the speed and harshness of their music to a new level. Popularized by grindcore bands such as Napalm Death and Carcass, the blastbeat eventually became an essential, if not the most important and distinctive feature of extreme music.

The blastbeat is normally consisted of a double bass roll of 32nd notes, on top of which the drummer hits the snare rapidly on every downstroke (every other hit). The drummer usually also hits the cymbal the same time as the snare drum. This results in a very aggressive and fast drum beat, as the tempos in which the blastbeat is played usually range from 200 bpm upwards.

The blastbeat is a cornerstone in modern extreme music, as its brutality provides an apt setting for the grim and gruesome soundscapes of death and black metal.

very thoughtful, aenimated. thanks. I kinda figured that's what it is. My brother used to make fun of metal bands (he's in a metal band, strangely) by doing blast beats with his mouth followed by growls of "saaaaataaaaan". I always thought it was really funny but didn't know they were blastbeats. So, based on that, I would think blastbeats are a cliche and silly technique for technique-handicapped bands. But, this thread seems to be making fun of blastbeats.

*thread is lost on Dorian's ignorance*

No, listen to Trym. He owns your mother with blast beats....

.... IN BED!

Anyhow, I think blastbeats certainly fit a style of music... one which Opeth don't belong to. So it's a big resounding no here.

Actually, that's not far-off. Well, the cliché part.

I saw trym with satyricon...despite his very chumbawumba apperance he owned big time...very clean drummer. I do love blast beats, but only if they compliment the music...not if they're played in 90% of the song at least, with the sole purpose of being "brutal!!::beathe:: goooree..." for all those unpassionate brutal bands who have no soul, insisting that 0 songwriting skills and 100% sloppy one dimensional playing is the best. Don't get me wrong, that wasn't pointed all brutal bands.

"Hack3141: I really only see other sentients (so I'm told) as parts of my environment and not the proclaimed beings that they are said to be!
Hack3141: Quoting time"

Ok, just thought of something, this one's for all the no-blastaz. Check out a band called Scarve, part tech-death, part brutal hardcore, a lil' prog-metal, but everyone I know says the same thing... "They sound like Opeth with blasts." Check it out, then tell me you don't want TA-TA-TA-TA-TA-TA on the next Opeth album.

cliche, yes.

but they can be used very effectively if used strategically. a song with straight blast-beat loses its impact when the 'ground level' is the 'ceiling' for the whole song.

I like Opeth because they don't use blast beats, it wouldnt fit their style(even tho I wouldn't be surprised if they used them). Go listen to Marduk or Enthroned if you want blastbeats.
