It has been a week or so since we heard Viva Emptiness...

(Longer for some of us who had it a month or two before the album on mp3 and still bought the retail CD anyways!!!)

That is enough time to listen to all the smallest details!! Now it is time to vote! Choose wisely my KATATONIC FIENDS!!

(IF YOU NEED MORE TIME DON'T VOTE YET! ONLY POST INSTEAD!!)

I just can't fuckin decide...
it's really really hard, i like them both.
Though LFDGD is more monotone...but he has that special vibe and feeling that katatonia seemed to lose on the new one.

i choose not to choose.

I think everyone should stop comparing the both of them. They're both great albums, so it should just be left at that

At first I was convinced it's VE, but when I listen to it now I'm not so sure... I almost couldn't resist the desire to pick LFDGD out in opposite... but I've stayed 'tabula rasa'... :)
Yeah, final decision must wait till Wednesday when I see boyz live... I'm so excited ;):):):);)

To tell you the truth, I can't really choose myself either. I started this post because I wanted to see what the results would be and to see where everyone was with this.

Both albums have things over the other. They are both beautiful albums! There is NO reason NOT to compare them. All that does is showcase the maturation of the band and/or the band's mood at a certain point in existence. Jonas would like the albums compared, he would like to know what people think. Constructive criticism you could call it.

This much is for sure though Last Fair Deal Gone Down and Viva Emptiness blow away Discouraged Ones and Tonight's Decision, even though these are two other great albums!

You know a band is amazing when they don't have a single release that sucks, KATATONIA is one of these bands!

Full agreement :)
Jonas said they'd recorded more powerful alb, because people were satisfied if they played such songs live. So they finally did it...
I can't tell whether it's wrong or right direction they've chosen, but the truth is that both albs are perfect anyway... It is just Katatonia, depressing as usually... I don't know how do they do that... ??? :)
As for me the choice depends on your mood at relevant moment...

I voted for LFDGD because I find it to be more consistent and relies heavily on the melodies and melancholic feel that first attracted me to Katatonia, although Viva is definitely the more adventurous album...

Demonspell has summed it up for me!

VE

its gotta be......it may be biased since I am listening to it a lot more now than LFDGD but I think its too early to ultimately decide.
But for now,

VE

Well I cant really say which one is better but I voted for LFDGD because I can relate to it more. I dont know something about LFDGD just seems like it came directly from me. I love them both thats all I can say.

'Last Fair Deal' is much better than 'VE'. In fact, 'LFDGD' is probably my alltime favourite album. I rate (at this stage) 'VE' maybe just behind 'Tonight's Decision' and 'BMD', but well ahead of 'Discouraged Ones'. Like this.

1. Last Fair Deal Gone Down
2. Brave Murder Day
3. Tonight's Decision
4. Viva Emptiness
5. Discouraged Ones

I committed myself to opting for one of these records after the show. However, it feels much harder to take decision now, as all the songs sounded surprisingly evenly. Even guys’ attitude was the same to each piece: all were played and sung with great devotion.

There are of course significant differences between those two albs.
VE is much heavier, and full of indefinite anxiety and anger which totally took possession of me. Listening to it I got the following strange impression: see me standing in hospital in front of the dividing green wall of glass just watching my dearest spirit laid down in a coma. I can hear permanent biiiiip sound when heart’s not responding. For single moments I find myself inside that half-living/sleeping body and try to escape rather towards death than life. I think this time guys emphasized helpless more and came closer to death adoration then ever before.

From the other hand we have LFDGD, which is melodically melancholic and more ‘optimistic in its pessimism than VE’. I don’t even make any effort to tell anything in disadvantage of this alb. Songs like ‘Chrome’, ‘My Sweet Nurse’, ‘Clean Today’, ‘Tonight’s Music’ or ‘the Future of Speech’ simply knock me out. The general impression of this record is like I’d dashed in rainy day along the street crushing into strange faceless pedestrians.

In this too long statement I intended to relay that one shall not judge the feelings. Both records are extremely personal and thus supreme! There’s no need to conduct any battles!
I decided to vote for VE at last, guess as opposed from the majority here, which in my opinion truly underestimates this record. I personally got rid of any doubts. I expect results to be 50/50.
