Beer

Tried Duval and Allagash the other night. Wasnt too impressed with either... :( However, I was shitfaced when I tried them, so my opinion may be not be entirely accurate. I need to try again, not shitfaced.

^that's awesome.

I paid a visit to the city's best imported beer shop last night and bought a bottles of Young's Double Chocolate Stout and Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout. Haven't tried them yet. A Fin du Monde as well.

I also picked up, and drank, an Affligem Double, a Schlerkerla Rauschbier (German smoked ale) which I've had before and love both. Also had a Sierra Nevada Pale Ale which I didn't find particularly impressive. I've never really drank any beers from North America before, they are almost impossible to find here (other than Millers/Bud etc which obviously doesn't count). But this shop has a reasonable selection so I will have to check some more out. If anyone has any 'must-drink' recommendations they would be appreciated.

I also spent yesterday afternoon at the local microbrewery, Little Creatures, a place I frequent quite often. Many of their beers are average but the Pale Ale is good and the Amber Ale (Rogers) is quality.

So tried Nøgne Ø Dark Horizon 3rd Edition yesterday. I've been wanting to try i for awhile now and it didn't disappoint. REALLY sweet, almost like port wine. If I could choose the coffee tones could have been more up front but it still is one of the better beers I've ever tasted.

Rauchbiers are probably the only style of beer I absolutely cannot drink. Bleh.

In regards to Ruination vs. Hop Stoopid, it's a hard call for me. Hop Stoopid is one of my favorite beers, but fresh Ruination is absolutely tits. The only thing better than Ruination is Cask IPA...fucking nectar of the gods.

So that Acer Quercus I posted above was pretty interesting. Definitely not what I was expecting. It was more like an Imperial Stout but with the smokiness upped. It was quite delicious. I might have to go back and pick up a bottle to age

Imagine that, mead with a strong honey taste. Who'd have thought!

Considering you can alter the overall strength of the sweetness of honey in mead by changing the amount of honey you use - combined with fermentation length and other factors - yes, being surprised by the overtly strong honey flavour of a mead batch is actually quite normal.

Instead of making stupid comments, maybe you can dig up some more "TALK OF THE DEATH METAL UNDERGROUND" bands to share with us.
