What bands are the best in each genre, Im curious to what you all think. My choices
Death-Death
Black-Immortal
Thrash-Megadeth
Power-Don't listen to it enough
Classic-Judas Priest

discuss

Death - Lykathea Aflame or Atheist
Black - Diabolical Masquerade, Sigh or Burzum
Thrash - Heathen, Watchtower, or Coroner
Power - Morgana Lefay or Secret Sphere
Classic/Traditional - Blaze
Doom: Candlemass or St. Vitus
Folk: Ashtar
Viking: Moonsorrow
Progressive: Pain Of Salvation or Spastic Ink

My list seems so much better than yours.

This, of course, changes CONSTANTLY, but:

Heavy Metal: Manilla Road
Doom Metal: Black Sabbath
Power Metal: Fates Warning
Speed Metal: Agent Steel
Thrash Metal: no fucking clue, couldn't even begin to try naming one
Death Metal: Nihilist
Black Metal: Bathory

It just so happens that oftentimes the originators do it best, period.

I think its easy with thrash, because there are 3 bands that just stick out and and are just ahead of the rest. Metallca, Megadeth, Slayer, those 3 love em or hate em had a huge impact on metal period.

Wow you've created another really generic thread. Whats next, top ten albums? I'm gonna reply though, cuz at least its a generic thread I haven't seen in a while...

Black: Emperor/Burzum (with Deathspell Omega catching up...)
Death: Demilich
Doom: Aarni
Folk: Agalloch
Funeral: Skepticism
Gothic: Theatre of Tragedy
Heavy: Black Sabbath
Melodic Death: At the Gates
Progressive: Opeth
Sludge: Neurosis
Viking: Falkenbach
Viking Black: Enslaved

Black: I know Blut Aus Nord is considered by some to be the best, but I rather listen to Naglfar.
Death: Martyr
Thrash: Testament
Power: Heavenly (music) Morgana Lefay
Classic: Rage
Viking: Wintersun
Speed: I would have to check my cd collection again.
Best all around: Nevermore
i forgot prog: Symph X or Adagio

My list changes from time to time.

Death: Death
Heavy/Traditional: Judas Priest
Progressive: Opeth
Viking: Moonsorrow
Power: Blind Guardian
Doom: Katatonia

Don't listen to much black metal but if I had to pick, I would choose Bathory.

I might have to list more than one band for some.

Doom - Cathedral,Solitude Aeturnus
Thrash - Slayer(old),Testament.
Death - Immolation
Black-
Power- Brainstorm(ger)
Classic - Judas Priest,Jag Panzer
Heavy/Progressive - Mercyful Fate,King Diamond
Mainstream metal haha - Metallica-s/t, put aside the trend factor and overplayed 'enter sandman' and this is a great well written album.
Sludge - Acid Bath
Stoner - Orange Goblin
Grunge/Hardrock - Soundgarden, Alice In Chains

Yea it sounds like a genre used to describe maybe 3-4 bands total, like winter metal

There are dozens of bands that play funeral doom you fucking idiot.

Black: Burzum
Thrash: Artillery
Black/thrash: Destroyer 666
Death: Portal/Bolt Thrower
Death/funeral doom: Mournful Congregation
Trad: Priest
Power: Dragonforce

Ehh, Pagan Altar deserve a mention too, but the genre is a bit iffy. Probably NWOBHB/trad doom.

The only two I can say for certain are:
Doom - My Dying Bride
Black - Emperor (then Darkthrone)

Death metal is hard to choose. Either Death, Lykathea Aflame, or Atheist. Nile is a contender too. Or maybe Morbid Angel...bah, it's impossible.

Death: Cryptopsy
Black: Emperor
Heavy: Judas Priest
Thrash: Kreator
Progressive: Pain Of Salvation
Power: Ark >_>
Avant-Garde: Mr. Bungle

black: emperor
death: cephalic carnage
thrash: kreator
viking/folk: thyrfing
traditional: judas priest
power: blind guardian
prog: symphony x
