best record of 2004

I thought it was 'Heavy shall burn - Antigone'... But Ive gone off that album now.
Then I thought it was 'GodForbid - Gone Forever', but that also got boring.

The New "The Haunted" Album is a contender for me but I dont prefer it to 'Heavenly- Dust to dust' or 'Nightwish- Once' Yet.

Id say 'Nightwish - once' is my favourite album because I find the operatic Massive song writing totally awesome and the band is doing, like, a one and a half year non stop tour on the back of it, Which I really really respect. I also think the level of composition on the album is very high and it has little in filler tracks. It has a great Dynamic of the Mellow side to the more Brutal side of Nightwish.

you can always update your reply even years from now, whenever you stumble into a release from 2004 that is actually better than the others. ;)

Well, could you tell us what was the best album of 1984, then? :heh:

-Villain (always lagging behind in everything humanly possible)

well it looks like I'll be the first to give a serious answer to rahvin :D
I will nonetheless give two albums, because I really can't decide which I like best, basically because they're quite different...
so here they are!
A) Mastodon "Leviathan". because it's truly an impressive piece of art under every aspect, artwork included. Great songs, great vocals, great drumming, great riffs, complex yet catchy... it has everything that makes metal a form of art, and that made me fall in love with this music.
B) Isis "Panopticon". because this simply crushes. it's the natural progression for the band, and the diversity in the vocal dept. is welcome. Music that really takes the listener for a ride within his inner-self, and leaves him longing for more

close behind come Dillinger Escape Plan and Neurosis.

Without doubt it's ISIS's Panopticon. Why? I have to prepare myself each time I plan to listen to the album because it's so emotionally draining.

Pain of Salvation's "BE" has one of the best tracks of the year (Iter Impius), but not much else significant

Magyar Posse's "Kings of Time" opened my eyes to the world of post rock, which has been my favoured music for the past few months now, and these guys remain my number one pick of the crop.

Paatos's "Kallocain" is amazing, though contains no equivalent of Tea

Ayreon's "The Human Equation" captured me for many a listen, very well put together album and one of the most enjoyable of the year for me. But i wouldnt say it was pushing any boundaries i particularly want pushed, or blowing me away.

ISIS's "Panopticon" is quite good, i guess

Ensiferum's "Iron" is very addictive and takes the award of must fun album for 2004, i could kill someone for causing me to miss them at tuska :/

hmmm.... Magyar Posse gets my vote i guess.. unless i'm forgetting something significant

Pain Of Salvation's BE so far, and I don't see any album surpassing it even though some very good ones are still to be released. Like YaYo (can I call you Dave?) said, Iter Impius is one of the best songs of the year (even ever) and I think that it has much much besides it that's significant. Even the most of the time annoying vocal preludes are significant, in fact they're crucial for the concept and contain some very subtle things that are so interesting. So even though the concept might sometimes be too much to take on the album, it's so captivating otherwise.
As usual, the music is perfection and now even more varied than ever. Again, as usual, it's a love/hate relationship. Sometimes I just can't listen to PoS, but when I do I know I'll love it.
The Paatos album is a very worthy mention, just like The Human Equation.
What else?
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds' Abattoir Blues/The Lyre Of Orpheus was pleasantly surprising. When the only drag is the sometimes overflowing religious praise (and this is Nick Cave you know), I think it has to be a great album. I love the man. :)
(and listening to The Boatman's Call a couple days ago was so emotional)

Mooore.....oh yes, Rammstein's Reise, Reise. A German friend of mine said that their lyrics are oh so simple, but I like them a lot. Catchy riffs, solid drumming and nice vocals.
Nightwish's Once and Iced Earth's The Glorious Burden were sort of albums that I would've liked, had they come out 2 years ago. I still liked them, but I see why I don't like them too much. Jon should write a new riff sometime, and Tuomas write about something other than the ocean, innocence and angels. Ghost Love Score is a very good song.
Oh yes (again), My Dying Bride's Songs Of Darkness, Words Of Light was awesome. Good doom, or whatever genre puritists would like to call it.

Still waiting for: Pineapple Thief, Strapping Young Lad, Devin Townsend (?), Dark Tranquillity, Green Carnation and Nightingale (still getting into it).

I need to check out this genre where Neurosis, Isis and Cult Of Luna seem to constantly get mentioned. Might have more contestants for the album of the year then. Been too lazy.

That's mostly it for this year, folks.

yes you should definitely do such a thing... I discovered this subgenre recently, with Neurosis's "A Sun That Never Sets" which left me with the desire to be squashed again like a tiny ant by their onslaught. If you want a brief description, it's slowly, dirgey music, with punshing walls of heavily distorted guitars, pulsing bass, usually tribal-like percussions, and vocals that simply can be described as "desperate". As with all the slow music, it's strongly emotional and deep, and can become very addictive, in an almost physical way. Neurosis are usually considered as the forefathers, but Isis (of Hydrehead's founder Aaron Turner) have surpassed them imo. The last Neurosis is more psychedelic, almost pink-floydian at times. Cult Of Luna are good, but I haven't heard "Salvation" yet

Isis? I hearde a lot of good storys about them but in my fucking boring town(with100.000 inhabitans) theres no record store with their oceanic album.this one I will hear first bevore buying the newest one.
must buy them on amazon next time

@King Chaos
HSB antigone is really a killer in the metalcore-genre, I heard just one track on a promosampler and it blew me away, bought it next day
for a german band very good work

Well my best album for this year will be(I did not hear it yet) for sure I know it

-Omnium Gatherum-Years of Waste-
Their first 2 albums are one of my alltime favorites since I discovered this band, unbelievable...bat unfortunally Nuclear blast switched the releasedate of the new album from this week to 15. november
other killers in the 10 months so far:

Eyes of fire-ashes to embers, if you like Isis or neurosis, this is your band
The Duskfall-Source, swedish deathmetal, great new band
The Great Deceiver-Terra incognito, modern death/hardcoremetal with tompa, great guitars , one of my favorite albums
Killswitch Engage-The End of Heartache music with impact
Nasum-Shift- music with more impact
Heaven shall Burn-Antigone
In Flames-Soundtrack to your escape
Woven Hand-Consider the birds, darkest music I know

Isis' Panopticon seems to be a popular choice for good reason. I think Aaron's new "singing" style is a welcome addition to this already amazing band.

Another album right up there with Panopticon is The Great Deceiver's Terra Incognito. I've never heard Tomas Lindberg sound as strong as he sounds on this album. Great production on this album as well, especially compared with A Venom Well Designed.

Other honorable mentions:
All That Remains - This Darkened Heart
Amon Amarth - Fate of Norns
Neurosis - The Eye of Every Storm

:kickass:

I think it'll be Nick Cave and the Bad Seed's Abaittors Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus when I will finally have enough time to buy the album and listen to it.
Anyhow, the best gig so far - of all time that is! - is Nick Cave's concert a couple of weeks ago in Helsinki. :')

Nick Cave's divine music also brings back memories from a week ago from our wedding and the music playing behind. <3

for me it's an italian oi! act, banda bassotti, with 'amore e odio'. the guys are my favorite national-language band and the record is extremely brilliant, especially because i would have expected the quality of their music to fall through the years but they are still on top of it: energetic, fun, full of rage and able to motivate, eventhough the lyrics are a bit last century. considering that 2004 brought a bad religion record and a rammstein record, this one was a pretty unexpected winner. i might revise my opinion when 'encore' finally comes out tho.
