If I had to say, I'd probably go with Therion's Lemuria/Sirius B. I think they've really come close to perfecting what they do, and hey, I'm just a sucker for it.

@fireangel: I was going to nominate Before The Dawn as well. The problem with them and Killswitch is they seem a bit teenybopper, but that's ok I guess.

Before The Dawn is still so damn boring. I can just about listen through Unbreakable (nice early-Opeth riff (before and) in the verse) and Father And Son (just to think how I would re-write the lyrics so it would be a better song) and then I realize that I have better stuff to listen to. A ton of melodeath bands have done the same thing, much better.
Album of the year? I don't get it.

Oh and Creek Mary's Blood is one of the more interesting songs on Once. That and Ghost Love Score (and Higher Than Hope, but the lyrics kinda suck) are the only songs worth a listen now a while after the release, really. Still, not a bad album on the whole, just not that great either...

@Horseman: 4:17am just gives you some of that feeling of despair, and manages to sound pretty fresh. plus his growls are actually really good imo. maybe they are repeating a formula, i cant argue with that, but they do manage to pull it off.

Well from all the music I listen to the only album I have bougth this year is Exposures and The Gallery so I guess I will go for Exposures.

I'm always so outdated since I listen to so much music ^^ Need to see if there are any new albums out soon.

So, after reading all this stuff here to look back what was actually released this year, I have to agree totally with J Mann and Northern Viking. So, my choice is

Disillusion - Back to times of Splendor

Bought it on a gig of Disill in my hometown although the gig was not good (the sound sucked totally). I was really impressed by the album and listened to it many times the following weeks. Then I saw them a second time at Summer Breeze Festival, and it was one of the best gigs this year. I nearly cried because of all these feelings coming up in me.

Another great album is Amon Amarth - Fate of Norns. Although slower, I totally love it. And even better than AA is

Kataklysm - Serenity in Fire

Unbelivable, this record. No more comment on this! And to mention a 4th one: Finntroll - Nattfödd.

My choice for album of the year is definitely Into Eternity's Buried In Oblivion. The clean and death metal vocals are great and the drumming and guitar work is amazing. I've been listening to this album all year and it hasn't gotten tiresome in the least.

Shadows Fall-The War Within

That disc just kicks major as from start to finish. Im glad they are getting the recognition they are getting. They deserve it. I think they are better than Lamb of God.

I stand by firefest9. I like Shadows fall. If you've got problem enough with that to express distaste toward some one then you needsome fucking help. Shadows fall are a Fucking Awesome Live band and all their albums are sweet 'IMO' (<like I have to remind you of that).
