Best songs of this year?

Albums are made up of songs, but listening to songs =/= listening to albums. Listening to songs is the way pop music fans listen to music. They hear hit song onm the radio and buy album for hit song (or 45 RPM single back in the day) and play said song over and over potentially never hearing the rest of the album.

I realize that in this digital age that listening to songs has become very common for fans of every genre, but I think the song experience is inferior to the album experience. This is especially true from an artist that actually pays attention to album structure. I think Nevermore is way more powerful in album than song. Many others too.

While I get where you're coming from & I agree with you 100%, you shouldn't take it so seriously - after all it is a public forum & folks will start threads asking questions like this. In essence they're completely harmless. It will give you a little chance to maybe analyze some songs you liked from recent releases if anything.

I have only a hand full of albums from 2007, but the only real standout song besides the entire Therion album is Planet X's "Desert Girl" with Holdsworth on guitar. The Dave Martone album is great as a whole, but I can't really pick out anything special out of it to call my favorite song. These two albums also aren't Metal per se. Here's what I have so far from '07 -

Alcest "Souvenirs d'un autre Monde"
Buckethead "Pepper's Ghost"
Cephalic Carnage "Xenosapien"
Dave Martone "When the Aliens Come"
Dimmu Borgir "In Sorte Diaboli"
Dream Theater "Systematic Chaos"
King Diamond "Give Me Your Soul... Please"
Megadeth "United Abominations"
Nile "Ithyphallic"
Obituary "Xecutioner's Return"
Planet X "Quantum"
Skinny Puppy "Mythmaker"
Symphony X "Paradise Lost"
Therion "Gothic Kabbalah"
Wolves in the Throne Room "Two Hunters"

To me the only thing super great is the Therion. I haven't done too much adventuring on new stuff this year as I've been playing catch up on past stuff all year long, so I've only got the new talked about albums of interest to me. I also have a few more '07 albums downloaded I haven't spun yet like Behemoth & The Faceless.

Novembers Doom - The Voice of Failure
Swallow The Sun - The Justice of Suffering
Be'lakor - The Desolation of Ares
Om - Unitive Knowledge of the Godhead
The Absence - World Divides
Odious Mortem - Domain of the Eternal Paradox

Listening to a song takes from three to fifteen minutes. Listening to an album takes from thirty to sixty. Even "back in the day", people would listen to individual songs, as you sometimes don't have more than a few minutes. This really is so self-evident, I don't see why you bothered posting it.

Songs of the year:

Darkthrone - These Shores Are Damned (I've only listened to the album a couple of times, though)
Graveland - Victoria Divina
Doomsword - Days of High Adventure
Reverend Bizarre - Anywhere Out of This World
Warning - Footprints
Orne - A Beginning

I knew the Warning one was right on the border, but I just checked my Orne LP, and it said Black Widow Records 2005. Guess I was way off!

And I'll give "A Beginning" and "Lighthouse" some consecutive spins and make up my mind!

Limbonic Art - Lycanthropic Tales
Lunar Aurora - Das Ende
Marduk - Accuser/Opposer
Behemoth - Prometherion
Dimmu Borgir - The Sacrilegious Scorn
Desaster - Razor Ritual
Deathspell Omega - The Shrine of Mad Laughter
Darkthrone - Church of Real Metal
Mayhem - Anti
Nile - Papyrus Containing the Spell...

2005 wth? :p

Do it! A Beginnning is really good too, the only song on the album that isn't perfect is Anton imo. The rest is pretty much 10/10.

Oh, Still Alive off the Portal soundtrack is extremely win, back on the original topic

Devin Townsend - By Your Command (definitely my favorite off that album)
Porcupine Tree - My Ashes
Dark Tranquillity - The Lesser Faith
Symphony X - Paradise Lost
Symphony X - Set the World on Fire (this probably wouldn't have been on the list if I hadn't seen it live... oh man)

07 hasn't really been my favorite year for metal, but it's not bad by any means.

Evile - Enter the Grave
Overkill - Devil in the Mist
Sanctity - Zeppo
3 Inches of Blood - Forest King

I've gotten a ton of new music this year so idk if i can really name one song. that is greater than the rest

Dream Theater - Prophets Of War
Symphony X - Domination
Threshold - Pilot In The Sky Of Dreams

I haven't bought many records so far during this year, and moreover I can't remember the most of them. I've just bought the last Sieges Even, Overkill, Circus Maximus albums and some more stuff, yet I have to find time to listen to them. I suggest everybody to take a listen to the above mentioned Threshold song, it is great.
